There was a thread on Wilton that Squirrelly replied to and she put it very well in her comment

It is hard to avoid fibers, hairs and dust from getting it to food. You have hair on your clothes and also enviroment. I vacuum at least once a day. I have two cats and a dog and never had a client complain about finding a hair.

I have been to Baker Sqaure on three ocassions and found hair in my food.
i have vacummed the dog but I find that brushing every couple of days helps and the pets feel so much better with all the extra hair off of them.

Everyone has hair and dust is everywhere, but my hair hasn't been in a litter box, and dust from my nose hasn't been in dog poo or garbage when I've looked for somewhere to pee.

Please. Keep your pets, and their hair, out of the kithcen. It's gross.

I do not have a pet at home, well except for one Beta (fish) in a bowl.
But hair on cake or food is always gross, whether it is animal hair or human hair. Last week at the Cake Show here at the CA State Fair, one entry had hair wrapped around the cake on the side, and under the topping of the cake. The judges had to debate whether to disqualify or not, since it could be from one of the judges, but then the hair on top was half buried under one of the Cherry toppings. So it looked like it got in there from where the cake was made. It was disqualified immediately. I guess it is ok to have pets around the house when baking as long as non of it get on the food. icon_smile.gif

I realized today that one of my daughter's stuffed animals, a large black gorilla, sheds hair too! It was all over her from hugging it! Just one more thing for me to worry about.

Are there any documented cases of disease caused by the occasional stray pet hair in food?

I have fur children too so I take extra precautions also. I vacuum the counter tops and floors in addtion to mopping. And I keep the fur kids out of the kitchen. Before I bake I put on a white or pale colored shirt so I can easily see any stray hair (mine or the kids).

I have never heard of any case where someone has gotten sick off of animal or human hair in the food. Even so, it is still gross to find something like that in the food.

I really do not think that there is a doucumneted paper anywere , however keep in mind and i am about to get gross here.....

I was watching a discovery channel show were the funny little guy was doing a test in regards to pets anneseptic tounges and the glorious 5 second rule.

Wet foods that hit the floor no pets vs pets of course the pets samples grew twice as much ecoli bacteria Ecoli =POO

So, I would say if the Pet hair came in contact with the food it could cause a food borne illness however it is unlikely that the hair alone would have enough ecoli to make anyone sick but i am sure the risk is there

PS the show disprooved the aneseptic tounge thing as well especially CATS

I have a houseful of critters (the one in my avatar is my oldest) and have never had much of a problem with fur in the kitchen. In the pic the cat is on the old kitchen table, but since then I just keep barriers in the way of any of my furry children from getting up there at all. None of them goes on the counters because I removed their easy access and a gate keeps the dogs out completely. I have had to take these measures not so much because of fur but because of some of my pets' fondness for cake and frosting. I also use my Kirby vacuum on everything in the kitchen with the attachments and change clothes before baking or decorating. I too would give up decorating before I would give up any of my pets. They are my babies!!!

I have a cat and a dog, both of whom come into the kitchen. I clean meticulously when I work. I would say that pretty much all people have an animal somewhere in th house so a cake from me could well get an animal hair on it from their own house, from the car of the journey from my house etc. etc. I personally don't give a toss if I find an animal hair - but a human hair - UUURRRGH!! My hair is very long I tie it back all the time in the kitchen.

In order to be a legal business in Kentucky you can not make food in your own home kitchen to sell to outsiders. One reason is the pet issue. If you want to legally sell food products from home you have to have a kitchen separate from your own home kitchen and it must even have a separate entrance. This is frustrating to me because we do not have indoor pets (unless you include children in that category icon_lol.gif ).

I called my local Health Deptartment to inquire of rules/regulations to opening a home based business and that is where I got my information. She (very quickly) said I could make cakes for family, friends, friends of friends, ect. but I couldn't advertise or have business cards. So I'll just continue selling cakes via "word of mouth". thumbs_up.gif
