I'm making a red bow for the top of a zebra styled cake. covered in pink fondant with black strips.
If you're using pre-made fondant, Americolor's Super Red is excellent. Or, since the bow most likely won't be eaten, you could buy Wilton's premade red, comes in that four-pack of primary colors.
If you making fondant (MMF), either add the Americolor or a pack of cherry Koolaid (unsweetened) to the melted marshmallows before the powdered sugar. Or add both.
Red (and black) can be a pain to work with b/c sometimes you have to add sooo much color to achieve what you need. Hopefully this will help. And, if you have time, you could let the fondant rest overnight, giving time for the color to deepen.
I did make some red mmf for the lightning mcqueen cake in my photos. It did take 2 tries to get it right, but still the consistency was a little off. I think yes, easiest to buy it pre colored, but if you do want to make it I found the best thing to do was to add the americolor super red to the melted mm's and do not add any additional water to the recipe.
I think not adding the water to the MMF is a great suggestion, all the color you have to use certainly makes red MMF sticky! I had to cover an 8-inch round red for my KISS wedding cake and it took four or five tries to get it done! I love, love, love Satin Ice, it's practically no-fail and the chocolate is to die for!
One thing that is good about Wilton is it dries quickly and hard, making it good for bows and such.
