my daughters first birthday is this weekend...i really would like to make her a special cake, i love the topsy turvy cakes, but the level of difficulty scares me...does anyone have any ideas or thoughts?

Welcome to CC!

If you follow the tutorial on here they aren't as hard as you imagine. You could make it just one tier to get a feel for it. You can get about 30 servings(maybe more) out of a cake using a 10/9/9 combo. But if you want to try a two tier the biggest advice I can offer is to make the bottom layer of the top tier at least 4-5 inches smaller than top layer of the bottom tier.

And use a cake recipe that is firm to help with stability.

I don't have the plate system that BKeith uses so I use wooden dowels and covered cardboard rounds.

I also popped my top tier in the freezer to make it easier to handle and get into place.
