I just saw a recipe for Golden Rum Cake on Allrecipes.com and it looked quite good, and it got rave reviews. I would play around with the flavoring on the buttercream though. I don't think the traditional buttercream would be a good taste match--but that is just me.
Let me know how it turns out.

I have made a rum cake by substituting my vanilla essence for rum essence and then made a thin syrup with some rum and painted it over my cake. Got rave reviews!
