I have my first cake due on saturday for a baby shower. Teh mom to be told me cater for 30 people. I was planning on doinmg a 12 x 12 inch square cake .

She says it will not be enough. This is the only appropriate pan I have available the others are small. She wants me to make 2 cakes and put them together.

I'm doing it free being as it's my first time and I want the publicity. But I really think it is just too much cake. I need your advise on this should I just do one cake or is it really necessary to make 2 and join them together?

A 12 in chould be more than enough to feed 30 people especially if you're doing a 2 layer, which I would suggest. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to feed 30 people unless you just slice HUGE pieces.

I agree that a 12" 2-layer square cake will be plenty for 30 people. Even Wilton says that a 12" 2-layer square cake will serve 48 party-sized servings, and I think Wilton is being generous. I think you should insist on only doing the one cake (but definitely two layers), and there will be more than enough cake! icon_smile.gif

a 12x12 would be 36 2x2 servings and if that's two layers torted thats a hunk of cake 2x2x4! (ok...so that's only 1/2 a serving in my household but .....)

and, no offense ladies, but since the guests are women, many young....there's going to be lots of the...

"no just a really small slice...I'm:
a) on a diet
b) watching what I eat --- (i do that too...right as it goes into my mouth!)
c) trying to drop a few pounds
d) --fill in w/ your fav. saying for "I think I'm fat!" (no dear, that does NOT make yo look fat!)

Doug you are just too darn funny.... icon_biggrin.gif

I just did a bridal shower cake for one of my daughters friends. Did it as a freebie/gift. The girls were afraid that there wouldn't be enough cake to go around, but sadly not everyone showed up. Even the ones that RSVP'd had gone missing.

Moral of this story is this: Not everyone is going to show up and like Doug stated above, you are going to have the "thin slice" girls there. And usually at showers, there is all the other food that is consumed before the cake too, so keep that in mind too.

I recently made a 12 inch 2 layer round...and it was huge...really. It doesnt look so big when you are just looking at the pan, but once it is stacked it looks like a lot of cake. I did mine for a shower also and there was maybe 20-25 people and there was a lot leftover. It should be plenty.

Show the mom the wilton serving guide if she insists the cake won't be big enough or if she gets snooty tell her to go get a darn wal-mart cake! That'll teach her to mess with the baker! icon_lol.gificon_wink.gif
