i am doing a airplane themed grooms cake. i thought about making a 2 tiered cake in blue with some simple fluffy clouds. any suggestions on how i could put some airplanes on wires around the cake? do you have to use a special kind of wire? how would i attach the planes to the wire? should i buy toy planes or make some out of fondant or marzipan? i've gotten some really cute ideas off the galleries but i think it'd be neat to have some 3-d effects.

I always use floral wire for this effect. Depending on how heavy your planes are will determine the guage.

IMO you should make out of marzipan or gumpaste (just make sure they are light enough). Even if the planes are not as realistic as purchased ones I think the edible, hand-made aspect is so much more appealing.
