Making A Swarvoski Crystal Monogram Top
Decorating By heychele Updated 24 Aug 2006 , 1:25am by heychele
I would like to make a crystal monogram top for my sisters cake for her 50th birthday. Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of wire or what I use to for the numbers?
I have already done a search and I can't seem to find what I am looking for.
Thanks!

I make my living making tiaras and other accessories for brides out of real pearls and Swarovski crystals. I can give you some general advice here, but if you have a picture (or font image), idea of the size, etc., I can give you a lot more specific advice.
I'd probably use 22 gauge craft wire for this project. You could use a sterling silver wire, but if so, use dead soft. Half-hard is going to give you way too much grief, though it's more durable.
Look for 5301 swarovski bicone crystals, probably the 4mm size, for the best effect and most ease. If you want even more dazzle, you'll be into Swarovski rhinestones and glue, and it'll be a lot more complicated.
I order my crystals wholesale by the 10-gross unit, but you probably won't need quite that many. In smaller quantities, you'll find good prices at www.riogrande.com . Order their main catalog and drool. Fun, fun stuff in there. If you think you'll need larger quantities of crystals, let me know and I can refer you to my wholesale suppliers.
Good luck!
I generally buy from EH Ashley, but if they don't have what I need in stock I'll go through K Gottfried or Merchants Overseas (in that order). If I'm desperate and my normal suppliers don't have what I need, I'll try the next tier down (geared more towards hobbyists--the sell smaller quantities, but prices are higher). The second tier includes places like Rio Grande, Mode International, Fire Mountain Gems, and Beads Galore.
You can contact Swarovski's New York office and get a list of all of their direct resellers.
I've thought about buying directly from Swarovski myself, but you need to purchase at least 30k worth of product per year for them even to consider you. I'm not all that far away, but I'm not there yet.
