Just curious what you all do with the cake cut-offs after you level them? Any good ideas other than having my husband and I constantly snitch peices? I hate to throw them away but don't like to leave so many lying around- with the increased number of cakes I have been doing, I'm sure to put back on the 35 pounds that I've lost over the past 9 months. Any good recipes out there??? icon_smile.gif

I believe the number one response you will get on this website is Cake Balls. If you do a search in the forums for "Cake Balls Cookiman" or just Cake Balls you will find a lot of different variations and suggestions.

There is no one real recipe, it seams everyone tends to make them differently for their taste.

I haven't tried them yet b/c I don't have any cake to cut off icon_cry.gif but have heard rave reviews... I may need to make a cake just for them.

All I can say is...my kids think I am the BEST MOM in the world when I'm baking...because my kids ( and hubby too!) wouldn't allow anything but to eat those delicious leftovers straight from the container! I've heard the cake balls are todie for, but haven't tried them yet. My leftover pieces never make it that far!

I LOVE THIS SITE!!!! I have never heard of cake balls but found a recipe and they sound so YUMMY!!! I have a ton of cut offs sitting in tupperwear right now from a full day of baking for the weekend. I'll have to give them a try. Thanks so much to all!!

I throw them away. ( icon_surprised.gif Did I say that out loud???)
icon_cool.gif I don't do that many cakes and I usually press on the cake with a towel or pan to level it right after I take it out of the oven so I don't usually have much to cut off. I would, however, definitely try to make cake balls with them.

found a good recipe somewhere (again, been surfin' lots with my new addiction!) - I think http://www.baking911.com

Adjust portions based on the amount of crumbled cake you have available:

Layer pudding into the bottom of a 9x13 pan (or whatever size you choose)
Crumble cake over it
Cover with whipped cream
Chill until ready to serve.

One of the things on my "to-do" list (if I survive this week's baking spree) is to search for "crumbled cake" recipes on sites like recipezaar.com and meals.com

Everyone wish me luck on this week's baking! I'm doing my first tiered cake Sat for a baby shower!

I've made a phony Tiramisu with leftover Choc cake. Just mixed Mascarpone cheese with stiff whipping cream, flavoured with Vanilla, doused the leftovers with a mixture of coffee and sweet liquer, and layered the leftovers with sour cherries and the mixed mascarpone. YUMMY! Sprinkling of cocoa on top

I have used them for trifles too! The chocolate cake is awesome with snickers and cool whip...I take them to any social event possible. Just layer cake, cool whip, and candy bar of your choice in a bowl...they turn out gorgeous and they taste scrumptious!(spelling) My favorite is pound cake with cool whip and strawberries in a strawberry sauce. UMMMMMMMMMMM I think I need to go bake a cake now!!!!!

I love this site!! Thanks for all the great ideas, I've been trying to figure out what to do with a practice cake that I don't feel like icing (besides eat it since I'm trying to looseweight too icon_lol.gif ) Good thing I have a pot luck coming up this week now my only hard choice is which idea to use. . .

I forgot too, you can also use pudding candy bar and cool whip with cake...four layers but works in a trifle bowl! Enjoy and have fun with it! icon_wink.gif

I save all the cake top in a ziploc baggie in the freezer. That way when I bake a cake and it doesnt come out of the pan completely (like a little piece sticks to the pan), I take out my tops, put them in a bowl with a little cornsyrup and mash it around with a fork. Add enough syrup to make like a cake "spackle". Then using a spatula just fill in your hole. Its easier than trying to put the piece back and ice your cake with out making a horendous mess shhh.gif
