OK, here's a weird question...I am doing a county fair cake decorating competition on Sept. 9th. My question is if I use real cake covered in fondant, how far in advance can I do it and not have it rot before the judging?? I don't have time to order the affordable cake forms off the internet, and styrofoam from my local Michaels will cost me $36 for the 3 cakes I am doing. I can use real or fake for the contest (just judged on decoration), so real will probably be cheaper. Will the fondant seal the cake so it doesn't fall apart, or do I have to suck it up and pay for styrofoam???
Thanks a bunch for any help you can give!

That is quite a cost for styrofoam dummies. Michaels and Hobby Lobby always raise their prices on items like that because its an all craft store not a specialty styrofoam shop. What sizes of dummies had you priced? im wondering because I bought 2- 6,10,12,14 inch rounds, 8-8 inch rounds and 2-6,8,10,12,14 inch square dummies. Thats 26 dummies total shipped for $35-40 dollars. If your interested go to www.dallas-foam.com As for the fondant covering, I still have dummy cakes that look perfect after 3 years. Flowers are still intact and drapes still hang. When I ordered the dummies it took a week to get here. Very fast. As for real cakes, I dont think I understand what you mean by sealing them so they dont fall apart. If there is anything else I can help you figure out let me know.
