Good Morning all CC'ers i tried to cover a styro foam 4in rd with fondant and i could not get it to lay right it looked like a table cloth i tried smoothing it down and it would have a pleat at the bottom can anyone tell me what im doing wrong at first i thought it might be to thick or too much fondant, Help im trying to make a mini fake wedding cake for our State Fair this year, ![]()
For one thing, covering a 4 inch anything is going to be difficult. However, it sound like you might have rolled out too much fondant and possibly too thin.
Try rolling the fondant until it's almost the right size and then put it on the cake. As you are smoothing the fondant, start from the top and gently lift the bottom to keep the fondant from sticking to the bottom too quickly. Once you get the cake smoothed down to the base, trim most of the excess and then smooth completely with a fondant smoother. Cut away the remaining excess with a pizza cutter or a flexible paring knife. A little bit of shortening on the knife will help prevent sticking. After trimming, you will need to smooth the base again. If there are creases/wrinkles, then gently lift the fondant and quickly smooth them with your hand.
If none of this works, use a big border. ![]()

I use soft foam dummies instead of Styrofoam, so the tops round themselves. For Styrofoam, roll the edges on the counter to soften them. This will help tremendously.
A very thin layer of piping gel works very well for sticking fondant to dummies.
For the most part, I roll my fondant to about 1/8" thick (I'm guessing because I've never really measured). If you think it was too thick, then just try rolling out a smaller piece and rolling it thinner.
Since the dummies won't be still, attach them to a temporary (or permanent) board with double stick tape or even frosting. This will make things a lot less frustrating for you.
Don't give up yet. Nobody learns to walk on their first try.
