I tried to icing my first cake last week and failed miserably. For all you self taught cake decorators, what was your method for learning to ice cakes?
I'm tired of baking huge cakes only to mess it up and there is no way to start over. It would be nice if I could practice on some foam or something....or make small cakes?
How can you practice piping and icing without going through so much hassle? I really need to master icing the cake.
First of all, are you using canned or homemade frosting? If you are using canned it will be very dificult to get a smooth coating as it is way too soft. I suggest going to Wilton.com, they have all kinds of tutorials. But as you will soon see Cake Central has a ton of members who will will be happy to share a ton of information and various techniques too. Practice practice practice is what it's all about though; we all have to start somewhere. Good luck to you and don't give up ![]()
Here is another thread that discussed how to smooth icing. Good luck! ![]()

I say check out sugarshack's buttercream tips. She tells you how to frost a round cake with perfect sides. Also, just keep some bc in your fridge, then practice on the back side of a cake pan or plate. That is how I did it. The more you practice the better you get.
I remember my Aunt telling me that she would make a cake for EVERY holiday and b-day so she could get the practice. All for family of course.
