Michigan Cake Decorating Buddy Wanted
Decorating By oneposhbabychef Updated 7 Oct 2006 , 8:25pm by butterluv05
Hi everyone! I didn't realize there were so many from Michigan on here.
I'm from Oscoda, about 2 hrs north of Saginaw on Lake Huron. I just started really getting into this recently and am self taught. Never done a paid cake yet, hopefully soon.
The Michigan chapter of ICES is very active. There are links to members on their webpage: michiganices.com that might be helpful--especially since MI is such a large state.
Good Luck & have fun!

I'm in Lambetville, MI. I'm just above the Ohio state line, I go to school at Monroe community college. I've taken wilton course 1 and 2 and course 3 was cancelled because I'm the only one who wanted to take it. I could use some help in the decorating area too!
Hi all! I, too, am from Michigan ... Essexville (right next door to Bay City) here. Let me just say, I am frustrated in reading that so many of you all are signing up for classes and they're NOT BEING HELD! While I understand the need for the store to make a profit, I think it's horrible that they are getting one or two people to sign up, get their hopes up, then cancel! Would we treat a paying customer this way when the order a cake? ("No, I don't think I want to make your cake for tomorrow. It's just not big enoung [i.e., I won't make enough $$].") BAD FORM!!! After all, they're already open ... if the shop isn't really busy, then two staff members can still hold the class: one watches the store, the other teaches.
That being said, I have to say that I am self-taught. I started at age 9 and have been going strong ever since. I only took one beginner class, and I had already taught myself everything in the class! My roses looked better than the instructor, even at age 10. Hard to justify paying for a class you already have the skills to complete.
So, what to do about our Michigan situation? I agree with the suggestion that maybe we can find out where everyone lives and determine a central meeting place for starters, then determine what to happen from there. I'd be willing to help show techniques I already know to anyone who would like to learn. Maybe it would be helpful to each have a list: what I already know vs. what I want to learn. Then we could pair up, if necessary, for some good one-on-one instruction.
Let's figure it out and make it work!
WOW...there are lots of Michiganders on CC...I too would be interested in joining a group...Downriver resident.
Hello all-
so if we did meet what are everyone's thoughts about what we would be doing? Would it be just for socializing, or would we try to do/learn something?
HI,
i see that everyone wants to come together.if we keep saying i want to join it is not going to work out.so why wont we all collect everybodys email id and then talk between ourself and find a solution.i am sure one of you should be very evey good with computers.so that person can collect all the info.i am not a computer person that is why i need help with this.
Would it be easier to do an EAST/WEST sort of thing?
Would it be easier to do an EAST/WEST sort of thing?
I do like the east/west idea; I'm on the east side of the state, about 1 mile from the Saginaw Bay. I'd be willing to host a small group and we could then bounce ideas off one another as to what we need/want to cover. If anyone is interested in coming to the Bay City area, PM me and I will see what I've got available to make it all happen.
Gotta love the Michiganese!! I'm in Greenville - about 45 minutes NE of Grand Rapids!!
Hi Everemton. I live East of Greenville. I was just in Greenville yesterday to shop at Meijers because they had their cake decorating supplies on sale for 25% off. By the way, what ever happened to that wedding cake that the "not so smart" lady said she was going to make? The thread that you posted that on kept going in anticipation of what happened.

It's funny that you ask - I JUST started a thread about it today!! It's titled "DRUMROLL PLEASE - Conclusion to "I've been snubbed""
What twon do you live in? We so NEED to get a GOOD cake decorating store around here!!
If people are interested in forming a small group on the west side, maybe we could take turns hosting and doing like a "lunch and learn" or something. Maybe we could share our strengths...doing a little "class" of sorts. I'd be interested in learning gumpaste/fondant flowers or fondant bows...anyone over here skilled at that?? I am pretty good a chocolate transfers, I could host a day of that...Throw out some ideas.

kylesmom-where downriver are you? I am in Southgate
Sherik wow-they are not far from me. So how is life in GA?
No-names do not ring a bell. Do they have children or grandchildren in Sgt schools? I have one in elementary and middle school.
How about meeting in Lansing Michigan. It should be fairly easy for everyone to get too. Does this work for you guys???? We are about 1.5 hours from Lansing. Maybe we can get a place to meet there. Resturant, hotel room ect... I think it should be a learning type of meeting, what do you think? I am sure we all have different expertise we can teach each other.

Good idea, Judy. I'd be willing to travel. Anyone have any other ideas? How about a meeting place? Any suggestions? And perhaps we can each offer a list of 3-4 weekend days (Saturday or Sunday) when we'd be available to attend. Then someone could coordinate so the bulk of us could get together the first time and possibly have our own little "day of sharing" to get us going.....
Lansing is about an hour or so away from me. But the west side works too! I think a lunch an learn is wonderful but how would we do demonstrations?? I think it would be cool for us all to share tips and tricks about how to do certain things. I am really game for that!!
It almost needs to be at someone's house. What do y'all think?
This sounds like we may already have a small group. How exciting.
I'm in Grand Rapids and I would love to get together. If someone puts something together please let me know and I will keep an eye out for anything posted.
I am in Grand Rapids, too--Cascade area. Just wanted to drop in and say "hi". ![]()

That is what I was thinking...if we formed smaller groups in our areas, then we could take turns hosting at our homes. I mean I would be willing to travel to meet everyone for like a social gathering (I dont get out much!) But if we actually wanted to learn from eachother, i think we'd really need to do some demonstations.
Well I am definately game. I talked to a couple of others who will probably be interested too.
Where is spring lake by the way?
