I have a couple tips that now have rust on them and one of my nails, too. Has this happened to anyone else? Do you know why it happens and/or what I could do to fix it?

THANKS!

I have a few of these too. I believe it is from water and not drying the tips properly.

Not all tips are coated to prevent rusting. If it is a Wilton tip they are coated and will not rust, if they do I'm certain they would replace it!

My Wilton flower nail has rusted on the underside, not on the flower making surface. I have never had my Wilton tips rust.

Everything is Wilton, and several are rusty. I use my nail when I bake large cakes, so all sides of it touch food products. I hate to think I need to buy new ones! Maybe I will contact Wilton...

Ok... call me crazy this is one of those old wives tales that actually work!

Soak all your rusted items in a bowl of Coke - leave for several hours and use a toothbrush to remove the rust particals...

Works like a charm... I have had to soak overnight on really rusted nails.... its always the underside of the nails that rust like crazy. I think they only 'coated' the top part and since I also use these in cakes as conductors, they can't be all mucky...

In the Wilton class I took, the teacher told us to make sure the flower nail was washed and dried as it would rust underneath but didn't say anything about the tips. I have made sure that when I washed I dried immediately just to be safe.

and to help that tip along...after you have done that...put a thin layer of shortening where ever the rust appears and it will keep it from rusting again. a thin layer. you can use your fingers too.

I have several Wilton tips that have rust on them. I know it's from them not drying all the way and being put away.
I think I'll try the coke as well.
Thanks for the "tip"!

I also have several Wilton tips and flower nails that have rusted a bit over time. I agree that it is from not drying them properly (I always leave them out to air dry).

I am so excited to try the Coke trick! I've read things before about Coke and the things it can do, and it makes me not ever want to put it in my stomach again!!!!!! icon_eek.gificon_lol.gif

Do any of y'all wash your tips in bleach water? This will cause them to rust.

I can see the flower nail rusting as their is actually an nail on it. I have actually had one welded back together because it broke.

As far as the tips are they rusted or just discolored? Wilton tips are nickle plated and should not rust. That being said you let them soak in water for any lenght of time they will discolor. Sometimse it's just a darker silver, others it is a rusty color. It doesn't rub off or affect the tip in any way, other than it not being shinny any more.

Most times rust will flake off or rub off, so if it is rust do contact Wilton about it. But it if does not rub off it may jsut be a discoloration.

That could be my problem. My dishwasher broke back in NOvember and I just haven't gotten around to getting a new one yet. I let my tips soak so maybe it is just discolored. Looks rusty colored. Thanks for the tip.

TexasSugar, I think you're right. My tips are not actually corroded like they would be if they were rusty, so I think they are just discolored. I usually do soak them in hot, soapy water before I wash them, so I'm sure that's why this has happened. I'm glad to know that there aren't actually flecks of rusty metal getting mixed in with my icing!!! icon_eek.gif Thanks! icon_smile.gif

Very informative thread, thanks guys, I learned by just reading! Mine are just discolored too. Probably from soaking.

I have had some tips that become discolored, but others have not and they have soaked for an equal amount of time. I do have some tips that are not Wilton and they tend to be discolored even more. I was worried that this was because I was putting them in the dishwasher. It looks like it just isn't me. Will the coke work on the discoloring too?

I have purchased some Bakery Crafts tips in the past from my local cake decorating store and they rust like crazy! I really hate it, but in order for me to get some of the uncommon tips I'd have to order from Wilton and I don't want to pay shipping for a couple of tips. So, I end up buying these cheap tips and throwing them out when they rust.

I use stainless steel cleaner (like you would use on your sink and counter tops) for discoloured tips, rinse off well and polish with a paper towel and they look like new again!

Soaked some in Coke overnight, and they look great this morning!

It was definitely rust on my tips, not discoloring...
