Need Some Suggestions For A Very Simple Wedding Cake!

I'm doing a wedding cake for my best friend on August 4th. This will be only my 3rd wedding cake. I have some time to think about it but I'm already getting nervous! So here are the obstacles, the wedding is out of town, the wedding and the reception are in different towns, I am IN the wedding. So I had her look at a couple of wilton books i have and a few on the wilton site (this was all before my hubby discovered this site for me) and all the cakes she liked were very ornate and had LOTS of flowers on them. So I told her that in order for me to be able to get it done she might have to choose something pretty simple. She said she'd love for me to surprise her. My mom is a florist and is doing the flowers so I was hoping to do something very simple and add lots of flowers that will also be in the wedding. Does anyone have any ideas for something pretty easy yet elegant?
I'm completely new here and am pretty much a novice, at least at the wedding cakes. Also, thanks for your patience with my big honkin' description. I'm so nervous!
Wow! WELCOME TO CAKE CENTRAL! You WILL find loads of information and positive people on this site. I know you will enjoy it!
I think that if you are thinking YOU need to do it simple then go for it! If you want to incorporate how the bride felt then you might want to add some fresh flowers to the cake. You would probably want to make your tiers separately to travel with and then you could get a pillar construction and put the flowers in between the layers when you assemble it at the site! Check out the wedding photos here on CC and they will give you plenty of ideas!
Email me and I could give you a photo of what I am meaning!
Don't be nervous! You'll do just fine!
What are the colors and theme of the wedding? What is she like, does she like dainty or deco, or modern or contemporary o traditional?
Give us a little peek into her tastes so it will be easier to give you an idea.
Oh and what flowers will she be using? and do you do fondant or buttercream work?
I have been in this same situation where I was in the wedding and making the cake, it is very hectic. So here are a few things I learned. Start early, you will be in a hustle and bustle mode just being in the wedding let alone making a cake. You can make the cakes themselves simple and just use a very ornate cake stand, pillars, and floral arrangements in between your tiers.(This just depends on her taste). Also, plan to set up early if you can so that YOU still have time to get ready!
When transporting them out of town this is what I do.....I use those plastic drawer storage containers(the ones you can stack in a bedroom or something) line them with the non slip shelf liner. I put one tier in each container and secure the drawer shut w/tape. I then line my car w/ the liner so the containers dont slip. This make sure each tier is safe and secure on the way there. also they stack on top of each other which make it easier to take from car to site if you have a dolley!
Sorry its sooooooo long!!!
I read the plastic container suggestion somewhere about a year ago and I never travel without them now!
yeah, i'm not at all worried about the transporting. i LOVE that rubber grippy stuff and i use large rubbermaid containers that stack. i was thinking about icing them smooth and bringing them with me when i go there for the rehearsal on thursday nite and add whatever else when i set up on saturday. think that's too early?
the bride doesn't like pillars or separators and didn't really like the cake stands i showed her (i thought of that). she likes them with no spaces between the layers. She really liked the one on page 53 of the '02 wilton year book. her color is lavender, many different shades of it so i really don't have to match anything. there will be lots of different kinds flowers: lavender roses, fresia, lilies, & caspia.
i've only ever worked with butter cream except for a wilton class. the other 2 wedding cakes i did were quite simple too. one of them is on pg 97 of the '04 wilton book. the other one i stole from a martha stewart magazine, iced smooth a bead border, grograin ribbon and rose petals.
I would say the top tier in a basket weave so it will be the smallest but have a texture, like a surprise element.
The largest bottom tier can be a shape, like the daisy orhexagon and the rest square.
Or different shaped tiers, for that surprise visual element since your decorating will be at a minimus.
Fondant borders for each tier, like balls or a ribbon (no bow, just flat even ribbon) in a lavender or periwinkle shade or shimmer shade would also be pretty and feminine.
And maybe one other tier with a simple design like swiss dots or a quilted stamp with dragees.
Can you picture what I mean. These simple little accents will say a lot about your decorating with your smooth BC finish and the fresh flowers. It will be a spectacular, elegant summer wedding cake. (The colors sound wonderful)
