I'm wrestling with a decision here.
I have an opportunity to run a tea room in a new antique mall here in my hometown.
I would be given the run of the restaurant, none of it to be done with my money (at present there isn't a tearoom/cafe in the building.)
All ideas my own.
Carte Blanc.
This antique mall is Huge, adorable and well run (by my pastor's sweet wife). I'm sure she would also let me do a cake/pie business there too.
My problem is...I have a fantastic paying job now (I'm an RN case manager...but I hate the job) vs doing something I would LOVE, but not sure if it would pay squat. (I won't OWN the cafe...profits won't be mine)
Also, not sure how much on board the hubby is. He's a very responsible sort of guy, makes me feel very taken care of, but he just doesn't take chances.
I'm a good cook, but never have run a restaurant. But this would start out small.
I think it has enormous potential.
Here is my plan at the moment.
I take the plunge.
I give it 8 mo.

If it fails, I can always go back to nursing.
What would you do???? Is this a good plan? Or am I just too excited to think straight?
We need the money. Getting close to retirement age.
But I don't know if an opportunity like this would ever come along again.
Not likely, I would think. icon_confused.gif
Please give me your thoughts.
My head is spinning!!!!

Wow, sounds like you have a lot to think about. Some thoughts that pop into my mind.
1. Antique Malls are typically dead on week days. I go to antique malls on a regular basis, and at least around here, 90% of the traffic is on the weekend. I can be at a huge antique mall for 2 hours and never see another customer on a Tuesday morning. Perhaps you could start out just working in the tearoom one day a week, like a Saturday? Maybe not have a kitchen or anything there, just bring homemade goodies and tea/coffee and see how it goes? OR, you could plan to have it open only on Saturday and Sunday until business picked up.
2. If you did give it 8 months, would the pastor's wife be upset if you abandoned it?
3. Could you do part-time nursing while running the cafe part time?
4. How much would you get paid? It is kinda hard to make a decision without knowing the terms. If I were you, I would tell her you would love to do it, but have some practical concerns to think through before you commit, and need to know exactly what the game plan would be - hours, pay, commitment, staff you could hire, etc.... BEFORE you commit to do anything.
These are just my thoughts. It sounds like an awesome opportunity, good luck to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow, what I would give for an opportunity like this. If your family can afford, financially, for you to be with a limited income for a few months I say go for it! Like someone else said, you can always fall back on your RN... and perhaps get a job you actually like! Kit

I agree with brittanydea, get the details ironed out first. This sounds like a wonderful opportunity! I know of someone who is a district attorney for a small town. She has that as her week job, and runs a small dessert cafe on the weekends. Maybe that is something you can do until the tea shop takes off. Just a thought.
