Last night I went to a sweet sixteen party.
It was in a very nice hotel, the birthday girl looked beautiful, the food was good, but, no cake. Well, there was a table with a dummy cake all covered in a sateen fabric.
I was there from 6:00 to 10:00, and at the time I left, most of the guests had left before me. I tought that singing the birthday song, blowing the candles, and eating the cake was important when celebrating this special date... am I old fashioned?

How can anyone have a birthday without cake? What were they thinking? No, you're not old fashioned.

I think nowadays, the important part at teen parties held in hotels is how many gifts are brought in.

Credit the spoiled little girls on that stupid "Sweet 16" show.

i can't stand that show "Sweet Sixteen". There is nothing sweet about them. I have never been to any kind of birthday party with no cake. That's just silly.

Geez, I've never heard of that program.....

But I agree, how can you have a birthday party party.gif without an edible birthday cake. birthday.gif At the least, the teens can have their cake with diet sodas so singing "Happy Birthday" makes sense.

And what's up with the fabric covered birthday cake? Cake as a fashion statement. Puhleeeeese. thumbsdown.gif

You know what's been weird to me lately about birthday parties? NOT opening the gifts!! I've been to one and my mom said she's been to a few where the gifts were not opened at all. Usually it's been for a young child's birthday (like 1 years old) but come on - that's part of the fun is to see what they get..... I just thought that was so bizarre.... I know you may run into the occasional duplicate gift and you might not want to embarrass anyone.... but come on, not opening ANY presents???

That Sweet 16 show on MTV is bizarre too - there was one the other day where a girl wanted a horse instead of a car - and she got a horse - one that cost $125,000!!!! That's more than my house! And heck she could've gotten 10 cars at least with that much money..... I KNOW there's got to be cheaper horses out there...... I was shocked.

That is one of the oddest b-day's I've ever heard of - OK - maybe you don't need a cake, but cupcakes, cookies, a pie, anything for dessert/coffee/tea hour. Hope this doesn't catch on.

I agree with those people who can't stand the show "My Super Sweet 16" on MTV. I want to smack around all those spoiled little brats. A sweet 16 birthday that costs $500,000?!?!?! Including a $100,000 car, for a 16-year old. Yeah right. PLus none of those kids DESERVE any of that it. They whine and cry when their parent tells them "no" - which is very unheard of by the way... for their parents to say no to them that is. Alright, I am getting to pissed off to write anymore. If you have no idea what this show is, you are lucky to never have witnessed it. LOL.

Heck....my kids open the gifts just so I can make sure they at least give a verbal thank you to the giver. I'm horrible about getting ty notes out....lol. Birthday = cake.

AGAIN Debi, you seem to have the EXACT reaction as I...would you like to place a friendly wager on the percentage of the young ladies (and I use the term loosely) who write thank you notes?!? thumbsdown.gif

Oh I am so glad this came up. In my local newspaper yesterday there was an article about a woman who has a business making and shipping fake wedding cakes!!! I think she is in Indiana, but not sure. I don't get this at all. The cakes aren't cheap either; $150, $200 and so on. Why would you want a totally fake cake at your wedding reception? Maybe I'm old fashioned too but I wouldn't spend the money if it couldn't be enjoyed.

My daughter is having a surprise sweet 16 dinner/party at a very upscale marina next week. She will definitely have a 3 tiered cake, drivers' license cookie favors, and homemade chocolates all made by me. The marina wanted me to use their pastry chef, but I negotiated because I did not want a standard sheet cake. I have heard of the MTV show My Super Sweet 16 and I think it is ridiculous. I watched about 10 seconds of it with my daughter and that was all I could stand. My husband is not in favor of this party, but I always throw my kids a big birthday party. I am the youngest of 8 and I never had one party...not even when I graduated college. I look forward to the big party every year. Oh, my little ones 4 and 6 open gifts at the party. I do not plan to have the 16 year old open her gifts there, just for timing issues.

I understand this since I'd never had a party either. I had never even gotten to pick what flavor cake I was having since my dad's b-day was the day before mine. (It was always German Chocolate Cake from the local grocery store!! I can't stand that stuff!!!) Maybe that's why I bake from scratch? icon_biggrin.gif

We tend to give our kids a choice between a higher priced gift and no party (one friend can stay the night) or a party is your gift. $125,000 for a horse?! Are you serious? That just seems so insane to me! We lived in a rundown motorhome for a year with three kids to save up enough to buy our $130,000 house and let me tell you, we really appreciate it after all that!!! I can't imagine handing a 16 year old a six digit gift! You know they're not going to appreciate it at all! icon_mad.gificon_confused.gif

I have a 14 year old and I promise you the only 6 digits she will be getting on her birthday day is if she gets 6- 1 dollar bills, or if lucky make those 20s.
We want our kids to enjoy their birthday but the trend around here seems to be these "hotel" parties! A parent rents 2 rooms and the girls go swimming, order pizza eat junk food and watch movies till they pass out in 1 room and the parents are in the other room with the connecting door.
Now this is ridiculous to me. Pay for 2 rooms, pizza for 10 girls, junk food, sodas, movies and take them all out to breakfast before they go home too!

This would easily run you 300.00 up to 600.00 for less than 24 hours!!!!
Not in my book ladies.

Does this mean I can't be excited because I just booked my most expensive cake ever? It's for a sweet 16 party in September, and the cake will cost about 1300.

wow 1300$?!!?!?! we may not agree on the parties but they sure are good for business!!!!
sometimes they can be a bit ridiclous i live in canada and 16 isn't a big deal but 19 is ( drinking age) when i turned 19 my bf took me to dinner and then the casino.. it was fun i enjoyed it he didn't spend alot but i had a great night.. and for my 18th he threw me a surprise party in my friends house.. nothing outragoeus or huge just a few friends celenrating... isn't that what a party should be about?? celebrating an occasion with close family friends rather then 600 people who could probably care less???

I agree be VERY EXCITED. I've been to several parties where the kids didn't open the gifts, some new trend. One mother said it was because she didn't want the other little kids getting upset because they didn't get anything, I wanted to say well DUH it's not their party. Let em open gifts and eat cake otherwise it's JUST NOT NATURAL icon_smile.gif

I FULLY AGREE!! thumbs_up.gif Oh.. sorry... newbie here icon_lol.gif but like I said.. I agree.

I would be out of my mind excited if I'd just booked a cake for that amount. It would also help with my son's 16th b-day party. I do the exact same thing with my son.. he has a party every year. Next year we will be 16 (May 27th), so the plan is to have a white party(here the guess come dressed in all white). He's a great kid..not like the brats on the "16" show!! And.. believe it or not.. the show has had some guys on it as well.. just as bratty!! thumbsdown.gif
