I made my first stacked cake today for a girl from my office renewing her wedding vows. I have planned and planned and baked and thought and thought about this cake for 3 months. The cake turned out like a disaster icon_cry.gif It was my first stacked cake and I'm not sure I'll ever do another one again!!! It was a 12" 9" and 6" cakes I baked and put it together and the 12" cake completely fell apart on the way to the reception. (It collapsed on the side of the cake and there was no saving it) The woman was very nice about it and I managed to salvage the other 2 layers but I feel SOOOOOOOO bad that I didn't even go to the ceremony in which I was invited to Sometimes life just stinks!!!!!!

Don't give up! Try it again. Have you ever heard "you are your worst critic?" When I do a cake, the FIRST thing that I usually see are the imperfections. If you salvaged the first 2 tiers, you saved the day. I'm sure they ate it and enjoyed it. Just think, in the years to come - they surely will not forget the cake you saved for them!

Oh I feel so bad for you!!! I hold my breath from the moment I start decorating a cake untill it is delivered and setup! I wonder if the stress is worth it sometimes!

***hugs***

I'm sorry that happened to you!! But don't give up. I know a lot of people transport their cakes stacked already, but I'm still too afraid to do that. And I don't think I could carry it, it would be too heavy for me (recent back surgery). I deliver in seperate tiers, then put together at the site. Maybe you could try that next time... (you will have a next time, don't give up!!).

I know exactly how you feel, I've had a wedding cake fall apart on me! You just have to get back up on that horse! Good luck in the future!

I feel your pain, but don't give up. Briannascakes has a good suggestion, and one that I follow as often as possible... assemble on site. It doesn't take long, if all you have to do is pipe on a border where the cakes meet. For my daisy cake, I didn't even put the pillars in until I got to the shower site. It took maybe ten minutes to assemble and complete the decorating, and had an added bonus of showing the hostess that I really did do all the work, since she seemed incredulous and swore that we got it at a bakery somewhere. -grin-

I also have a weird thing I've developed... I don't let anyone else carry the cakes. I know, I know... I'll have to get over that if I ever go 'pro', but right now, from the moment I decorate till the moment I take the picture once the cake's complete and in place on site, I insist on being the only one to carry or move the cake. Why? Because then if something happens, it's completely my fault, and I won't instinctively blame someone else for ruining my life. LOL

Seriously, though, it's become a little quirk, and it happened because someone else once carried a three-tier cake into a house for me... and it toppled because she didn't set it down exactly level on the counter... good thing I got pictures first. icon_razz.gif

But from that moment on, I haven't let anyone else carry or move my cakes. Call me crazy...

i'm the same way Don. i carry my own unless i absolutely can't help it. the last cake i let some one else carry was one of the layers for the grad cake (see my pics) i let the gf of the guest who the cake was for carry the middle layer which was the next to smallest it was on a board in a way that no one should have been able to put a dent in it. sure enough on the short ten minute trip she managed to get a dent in it and was completely clueless as to the damage; how can you miss the frosting. grrr. there ewas a lot of grrs with this cake but thats just one.
