i use to use wilton fondant and noticed people were eating around the fondant so i told myself that i wouldnt use fondant anymore. well i went to the ices convention in dallas and bought ( i think its fond x) it taste sooo good so i thought people would eat it well i still notice that people still eat around the fondant. i want to continue to use fondant b-cuz its so much easier to decorate. but i think people just prefer bc. is it just me or do you guys see it too? what should i do?
I have never tasted fondant because I have heard that it is NASTY and I prefer bc(my aunts recipe). I know that it looks really pretty and fun to mess with but I can't see sepnding the time or money on something that people are going to pick off. I must say that since joining this site I have heard great stuff about the mmf. People do not really get into fondant where I am from.
I think the big thing with fondant is the texture, its chewy. Most of my customers like BC. Although fondant is more elegant looking and fairly easy to work with, fondant has gotton a bad wrap, and it doesn't take long for the word to spread. You might try the rolled BC or MMF to see if you still have the same problems. So many people just peel it off, and I have seen where even the weddings of the elite they will take it off. It is for looks obviously more so then taste. Although I enjoy the fondant I do what the customer wants and 99% of the time its BC. The other factor is the price, most of us charge more for it and often times brides would rather have a quality tasting cake, then to choose something that people may not like. I think it matters too your demographic area, places like N.Y> and L.A. have greater exposure to this type of icing, whereas in the more rural areas, you have more down home folks that prefer things they are familiar with. They are not willing to go outside the box. I guess in a nutshell you may prefer to use fondant, but if people in your area aren't eating it, the word might spread that people did not like your cake, and that might hurt your business. I would go with what they want, and perhaps you'll get someone that will give you th opportunity to work with fondant.
Actually, I think that it is that fondant is very very sweet. most people don't even know what it is (kids like it once they've actually tasted it) and the ugly rumour that fondant is well to use mum's word "nasty". I agree wilton tastes like playdoh but mmf does taste like marshmallows or whatever flavor you use. But most of the time it's just very rich.
I also live in an area where you say the word fondant and you get looked at like you just spoke swahili. It is catching on ever so slowly.
I like it because it does give you a pristine canvas to do whatever you like. Whether it be flat or 3-d.
Hope that helped to answer your question.
First off...remember...WILTON FONDANT SUCKS! Not many people like it.
Try Satin Ice or Pettince Fondant. Pretty good taste, much easier to work with.
Secondly...some people like fondant...some dont. I prefer a hot firebrand stuck to my forehead...but thats me. My kid likes the stuff though. Go figure. Does make a pretty cake! Smooth that buttercream well and people will think it's fondant anyhow...and when they find out it's buttercream...they'll actually eat it!
