I am currently taking the wilton class 2 and I am having the hardest time making the daffodils. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to make them so the petals come out looking right.
I wish I could offer some tips but I also had a terrible time with them. I don't see myself making them ever again, to be honest. Maybe someone else can offer some tips.
Good Luck!!
I just made some the other day for this cake... I made the frosting stiff (I find it easier to mold the flowers that way) and you just make the petals basically the same as a apple blossom (just larger) and then dip your fingers in powdered sugar and squeese the tips together. Daffodills are just like anything else in cake decorating, practice, practice, practice. Good Luck!!
I found Daffodils easier than roses BUT soooo time consuming I actually liked mine except the squiggly thing in the middle I just hate tip 1!!! I guess all I can say it's keep practicing if you want them that bad ona cake or if you need like 5 make 15 but trust me no one will notice the mistakes we notice.
I am also in Course 2, we just did the daffodils Thursday. I actually used a tiny brush dipped in cornstarch to shape the petals. I waited until they dried just a bit. With the brush I curled them upward at the ends, and pinched them to a slight point.
I couldn't get them to look right with just my fingers ![]()
Sorry I don't have a pic yet, the final cake is next week.
I agree with BeckySue. Use the same motion as for the apple blossom petals, only larger for the daffodil petals. Then, I use a tip two to make my spiralling inner cone, and then top off with tip two tiny zigzags. I then dip my fingers in cornstarch rub them together to dust off the excess, and then pinch the tip of each petal to make it pointed.
When I took Wilton course two, my instructor showed us the Wilton Way using tips 1 and 3 for the inside of the flower, and then whipped out tip two and showed us how she really does it. The effect is pretty much the same both ways, and it really saves time to just use tip 2.
I had a hard time with the petals at first also. I'm still not great at making them, but they turn out ok now at least.
I found that the petals were very hard to shape on the first few because I couldn't get a good grip on the tip to pinch it into the pointed shape.
I finally figured out that I could turn the tip at a slight angle so that the petal was slightly cup-shaped instead of laying flat on the flower nail. That made it easier to pinch, because the end was up in the air a bit where I could get my fingers on the sides and it wasn't smooshed on the waxed paper.
I hope that makes sense and that it helps you!
Laura.
If you're having trouble with the centers, I know I have seen them done with a 104-ish tip to make the center cone. Looked nice, and I imagine much easier. It was some decorating book. Perhaps one of the Colette ones?
p.s. my daffodils stink too!
