I made an elmo cake today. used a wondermould for the body and made the head and arms with rice krispy treats.... i used a dowel stick thru the head touching the board and another 2 for the arms. The left arm refused to stay... it kept drooping so i finally used a little royal icing and held on to it with some support. After abt an hour it was perfect. I used the grass tip with the Wilton Snow white buttercream recipe and starting piping the fur. it looked lovely after i completed it.
But after abt half an hour the arms started drooping again. i finally didnt want to take a risk so i removed the RKT and used sugarpaste for the arms and covered them with the buttercream. It didnt look as good as the first one. I was really disappointed.
Does anyone have any clue y this happened. I surely want to make this cake again but dont want the arm to fall off.
Im posting both the pics.
TIA
Hmm sounds like you didn't let your rice krispy treats firm up enough. I like to make mine at least two days in advance of decorating and allow to sit out and harden in the air (loosely covered)
But someone else might have another experience.
Oh also, did you make your rice krispy treats or did you buy the pre-made and mold? I personally think the pre-made ones are not good and they will not be managable enough to hold up to forming, but someone feel free to correct me if you have done it.

I agree.. I am thinking that your RKT's were not firm enough. I like to leave the butter out of the recipe if I am going to use them for molding and not eating. I love the cake though! Too cute!
I made the rice krispies on thursday afternoon and used them today. I made them at home following the recipe on theie website. Tht had 1 bag or 40 marshmellows, 10 gms butter/margarine and 6 cups of RC. i did find it quite sticky to mould so i added a couple of rc extra. does it become hard as in rock solid? mine wasnt tht hard then....
When you say drooping, do you mean that the RKT were coming off of the dowel or that the whole arm was drooping? If you mean the whole arm was drooping, it was because of the weight. Whenever I do something like that I make sure to dive the dowel through the cake and into the board. It's better to use a thicker board for this. Once the dowel is driven into the board the weight is supported by the board and not the cake. If the RKT treats were falling off of the dowel, you can solve that problem by mixing them with a little chocolate (white or dark) and using the chocolate to adhere them to the dowel. This sticks it to the dowel firmly and make the RKT's firmer as well.
Best recipe I have found is 4 cups mini marshmallows, 6 cups krispies, and only maybe one TB butter but not much more or it helps it stay soft. I also put whatever dowel in there I need and refrigerate until firm and then work from there. I also refrigerate the cake when done until transport time.
