My doctor just started me on some new prescriptions to try to work out my back troubles. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these who can tell me what to expect. I've been on them for 2 days and seem to be a little perkier than normal. (I pray for drugs that cause hyperactivity, my house gets SO CLEAN! LOL)
I'm on Percocet, Elavil and Neurontin. I've been on and off Percocet for a while, so I know what to expect there, it's the other two that I'm wondering about. Dr. said the Elavil may cause weight gain (PLEASE, NO!!!)

Thanks Jan, that's so much more info that I found when I googled them. You are by far queen of internet navigation!
I love it when the side effects can be either drowsiness or insomnia. LOL!

I'm on Percocet (when needed) and Amitriptyline.. though the latter is supposed to be for helping me sleep not my back. Doctor never told me about the weight gain... icon_mad.gif Maybe I can blame it on that icon_rolleyes.gif
What dosage are you taking, I'm curious, I'm on 25mg a day of the Amitriptyline.
JanH - thanks for the link, had never read up on it before, just took my doctors word about it.

You're very welcome. icon_biggrin.gif

I just searched for "Physician Drug Reference" (worked in a hosptial for 25 years).

I love it when you given a prescription pain medication that causes headaches (as a side effect) - talk about your oxymorons....

I'm also on 25 mg/day of Amitriptyline. The doctor says there's something about it that targets nerve pain. The Neurontin is supposed to target another kind of nerve pain. It's one of those situations where they don't know why it works, but it does, so they use it. I'm on 900 mg of Neurontin a day and 5-325 mg Percocet as needed. They told me I could take Percocet every 4 hours, but MY GOODNESS!! The only time I take it regularly is at work, I have to sit all day and it's rough for a bad back.

You know, I never have been able to figure out how in the world I can get a headache when I'm taking Percocet! LOL icon_lol.gif

I just looked at my Precocet, it's the same as you....That's funny about the headache... I've wondered that as well.
I had to quit my job because of sitting all day,(9hrs and then the 3hrs of commuting to and from) it was just getting that I ended up taking so much time off and ending up in the hospital that I thought I just can't take this anymore... so quit, and that's what pushed me into doing cookies (and maybe cakes now) for a living.. love it now, can stand and sit when needed... it's been heaven for the most part... still have 2 disks ruptured and narrowing of the spinal column, but since I don't sit all day anymore, it's nowhere near as painful as it used to be.
( I had back surgery 10 years ago - and don't want to do it again)

Let me know how the Neurontin works, might have to ask my doctor about that...

Like you I only take Precocet when needed, ususally only one every once in awhile, but sometimes I've had to take 2 at a time, and boy when I do, my family and friends all laugh and say "you've taken those drugs again haven't you" they all say I get abit hyper and very talkative... icon_lol.gif
Does that happen to you?

Something has been making me a little hyper lately, not sure which one it is, but DH can always tell when I'm medicated. icon_lol.gif
I've got one ruptured disc, had surgery in March, re-ruptured it in April. I don't want surgery again, but I'm seriously considering it because of the risk of nerve damage. I had a lot of damage when I had surgery, luckily they could fix it. I just saw a new doctor (pain management dr.) He's going to do an epidural steroid injection and if that plus the drugs doesn't work, he's going to refer me back to the neurosurgeon for another surgery.
I'm getting a little desperate for my old life! I don't know how you manage!!

I'm so sorry that you're still having so much pain. Between my first and second surgeries, my neurosurgeon put me on Neurontin, too. All it did was make me shaky, so I stopped taking it. I hope it provides some relief for you. I found that the Percocet helped me a lot, but it just knocked me out whenever I took it. Plus, the neurosurgeon didn't have me take it very long because of the risk of dependency. I hope that these drugs can help you!! (((((Hugs)))))

Thanks for the kind thoughts, Jess. The Neurontin and Elavil are definitely helping the nerve pain. I still have back pain, but my leg doesn't hurt much anymore. What I don't understand it why my neurosurgeon didn't ever try them when I was telling him how much pain I'm in all the time!!
Still keeping my fingers crossed for that epidural!!

I used to take the neurontin for my seizers it does make you a little hyper in the beginning until your body becomes used to it.

I was on Elavil for a while for my migraines. I always took it at bedtime, because it made me a bit sleepy. I'm pretty susceptible to anything that can possibly make me sleepy, though, so I'm not a good gauge for that. If I take a Benedryl, I'm out for hours.
