Since becoming a regular member at CC, I have become very interested in competing at my local level in some sort of cake compitition. I don't know how to go about finding where cake compititions might be held locally in my area. I though the county/state fair level might be a good start. But I don't know how to go about getting in contact with someone before the fair starts. I live in a small town in Indiana. Does anyone have any suggestions, or examples of how they got started competing on their local level.

I would check ices.org. Maybe you could find someone locally from there.

Good luck!

If the fair does not have a web site, you can usually look them up in the phone book and they will tell you how to go about entering the fair. A county fair and the state fair are great places to get started with competing. After that, you just start surfing the web for shows.

Many shows are listed on the ICES web site (www.ices.org), sometimes they are listed in American Cake Decorating Magazine. Some you just hear about through word of mouth.

The only ones that I know for sure that are scheduled are the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show and the Mid-Atlantic Cake Show in Maryland. The Oklahoma show will be the last weekend of September. I think the Maryland show is going to be April 20, 2008. Sugar Wonders Cake Club in McKinney Texas is considering having a show every year rather than every two years. Oh, I forgot, there is usually a good show in Austin, TX in February. I don't know the date of that one.

I hope this helps and good luck with your competitions. By the way, read the rules very, very carefully. Each show has it's own set of divisions and rules. Many are similar, but there are just enough differences to be a little confusing.

I know the Lake County Fair is in Crown Point , In. And most of the entries go through the local 4H club. Check for those clubs in your area.
If you go and search at www.indianastatefairs.com
a lot of them come up and tell you where there located and when they take place.
