Has anyone found something you can use at home depot or Lowes for impression mats. Instead of paying the high costs of the ones you find on the web?

I wish I had! I did purchase a (relatively)inexpensive diamond impression mat from www.cakesbysam.com. I think it was about $5.00. I don't remember what shipping was though.

I got 12 impression mats off of e-bay for $5 plus shipping.......so mine were to high priced.

I've walked the isles looking for things at Home Depot and Lowes but havent found anything for texturing yet...but they do sell some stencils that you could place over fondant and stensil with royal icing or bc.

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but I've created my own impression mats by having a sketch laminated. When that was done, I traced the outline of the sketch with my hot glue gun and "voila".....impression mat. I've only done this one (you can see the results in my photos....the praying hands one done in stained glass). You could make virtually any impression you want in this manner if you so choose. The laminated sheet is flexible enough to allow for shapes, contours etc.... Hope this helps. Looking forward to hearing other ideas out there.

Happy decorating!

Thanks mac....it's amazing what we can come up with in terms of ideas when we don't have the "right tools" at hand. The one thing I forgot to mention, was to make sure you print your image in "mirror" image. This actually is opposite when you look at it, but when you press it down on a flat surface, you get it facing the right direction. Hope that makes sense...

You know, along the lines of lilscakes, at our St. Louis Sugarguild meeting, someone suggested doing this same thing to get an impression on top of the cake to use for drawings rather than the toothpick or piping gel method! It does work and can be reused!

Here's a link to Earlene's Cakes in Lubbock TX. She sells the mats online for $5 each. She has some other neat stuff, too.

I like lilscakes' idea, though. I may try one of those![/img]

You reverse your image on paper (just like you were going to trace it) then have that paper laminated to protect the paper from icing. Then outline the image with hot glue on the laminated sheet.

Does that help?
