Hi Everyone,

I have been baking and decorating for a few years, but just this past January decided to turn it into a business. It has been going well. This past week a local store has one of my cakes up for display. A few wedding planners have seen my site and are interested in talking about cakes for their clients. Suddenly, I am very nervous and I am not sure I am up to par. Some of their clientele are very high end and I am just worried that I am getting in over my head.

Anyhow, please take a look at my pics on my website and let me know what you think. Should I take some more time before I dive into big wedding cakes? I am so afraid of screwing up miserably!

Thanks!

You're joking right?

I can't believe you would even ask that question as good as your cakes are.

Oh and this is what the lady wrote to me, that made me question whether I am ready to do this...

"I visited your website and wanted to see if you offer wedding cakes? I noticed you have tiered cakes but not necessarily "wedding" cakes."

Ugghh......

thanks for the comments so far...it really helps me get the courage to do this.

edited to add...no, I am definitely not kidding...I just get so nervous with really high end clientele! Most of my customers are just really happy to have something different. I worry about someone having a very specific idea in mind and not being able to transform that idea into cake.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the oh so nice comments. It means so much as there are so many beautiful cakes from you all that I have saved to my favorites as well!

I know why I am so nervous...not sure if this happens to anyone else. But sometimes I will do a cake, be quite pleased with myself, and then come on here to post it, and then see some AMAZING cakes and then doubt my ability all over again!!!! Or I just sit with my mouth open in awe at some of the cakes in the gallery. I wonder how some get their buttercreams so smooth, how their cakes look so even, how their figures are so realistic. Know what I mean?

Anyhow, thanks for the encouragement icon_smile.gif!

After looking at your cakes, I'm not sure I should be in business anymore. Yours are awe inspiring! I wish I could make mine as pretty as yours. Maybe someday.

Anita, I know exactly what you mean about coming on here and seeing beautiful cakes and then feeling weak in comparison. Sometimes I don't even know why I am posting pics at all!

YOU on the other hand are awesome. I love the hand painted mask from gp. Amazing. I would love to learn from you. Seriously, you need to think about this...you have a cake ON DISPLAY IN A STORE. um...you are awesome. I only wish I could rub my hands on your used apron for luck. icon_wink.gif

tell them they can have one more cake for COST and then they have to pay. (maybe with a family discount). Have some business cards made up and give them to your family with the cake. Tell them to pass them out.

Option 2, call the bridal stores in your area and ask them if you can put cards on their counters. Also florists and photographers. Brides need all of those things. As for birthday cakes etc...do you have kids? make a cake for a class party and have cards available, or make a teacher appreciation cake for all the teachers in the school, have cards avail. If your cakes look and taste good, soon you will be so busy you will wonder what you were thinking!

I know a great logo/card person if you want. pm me

Thanks so much...I really, really appreciate it. Someone asked if this was a lol post and it certainly wasn't...I hope it did not seem I was fishing for compliments. As you can see, most of my cakes are not very traditional wedding cakes and they are covered in fondant. Doing an all white cake covered in fondant or buttercream makes me EXTREMELY nervous, since I usually cover up all of my mistakes with fondant! I figure most brides will want something really elegant and it may be out of my reach. AND, I have never done more than three small tiers.

Bakerj, I hope you nver give up your dream as well. I did free cakes for years! No one would think to pay you unless you tell them your price. I rarely do free cakes now...and when I do, I actually enjoy doing it, since it is usually a gift and I enjoy it much more when it is my choice.

Again, everyone, thanks so much...you have boosted my confidence. Hopefully, I will get a booking soon and I will be back for more advice!

Anita
