Our two and half yr old son has a very small toddler bike w/training wheels (great grandma had to be the first one to buy him a bike at 1!!).

Just wondering when they are old enough to grasp the whole peddling thing?? We've been working w/him all summer and he just isn't understanding how to peddle. He can touch the peddle and even the ground when sitting on the bike...so it isn't too big for him. I don't think he is old enough, but my husband thinks he should know by now. He LOVES riding the bike...but both our backs are sore from pushing him on it!!

just wondering if anyone knows when a child learns to peddle?

It depends on the child, some learn earlier than others. I have a 3 year old who won't peddle, he won't try and we really don't have a good place for him to learn since there isn't a sidewalk or paved drive at our house.

Both of mine learned between 2 and 3. They both got small bikes with training wheels at 2.

Both of them played around and just when we were convinced they would NEVER EVER figure it out, they hopped on and rode off down the sidewalk one day.

My daughter learned right about 3 years old. We bought her a bike for Christmas (she was 2 years, 9 months) and she couldn't figure it out at all. We bought her a big wheel for her birthday thinking that a different center of gravity would help with the pedaling motion. She couldn't reach the pedals, so that was a bust. However, right about that time she just started pedaling the bike on her own.

She has a Dora bike with the map and backpack so now we go explore. It's hilarious to keep up with each adventure. I guess it's like potty training.....they just catch on when it's their time! Have fun!

Hi,
mine just learned this summer he is almost 2 1/2. small bike with helper wheels in the back.
he has older brothers who were big helpers in teaching him.

pretty funny how they were pushing him and then let him go and were screaming:
go man go!

I have 3 kids all all of them were completely different. My daughter learned right around 3, my son was around 2 because he wanted to be like his big sister and then took off the training wheel way early around 3 1/2 and was fine - though it scared me! Now my last daughter was over 4 before she got it!!! So be patient - it will happen!!!! icon_biggrin.gif

My nephew is 2 1/2 now but still hasn't gotten the peddling down. He knows he can go faster still by pushing with his feet. He can reach the peddles and we told him its like running. The bike we have for him is one of those 1-2-3 bikes.

It most definitely depends on the child.

My 5 yo can and he just learned this summer. He's had a bike since he was 2 or 3, but didn't care for it much. He wanted to do other things.

My 4 yo will sit on a bike, and attempt to peddle for a second or two and then he's done.

We live out in the country, and the grass is much harder to learn in, in my opinion. 5 yo learned how in our building.

He'll get it sooner or later, but definitely later w/ mom & dad there to push--that's just more fun!! LOL!!!!

my two year old can, but my three year old cannot. It is so funny because they are the perfect example of how kids are so different. My three year old has been talking very well for a LONG time. I can reason with her. She is very smart.

My two year old is just now starting to say two words together, but she can open anything, unscrew all kinds of things, and hop on that bike and take off! Her gross motor skills are so good that I have her help the three year old open the door!
