Hi everyone. I've never taken a decorating class before but have wanted to forever. I LOVE to bake and decorate. I found out that our HL is going to offer the Wilton classes. They have them for 1/2 off. I was planning on using the 50% coupon to get my supplies but I don't know what I will need for the class. Can someone help me? The coupon expires today!! TIA!

BTW....everyone's cakes are so beautiful! I hope I can do one half as nice.

Hi! I'm in the Wilton 1 class right now at Micheals. I have bought an 9" round pan, 10"cake boards, Class 1 kit, derby clown set (they come in a pack of 4), you will need extra decorating bags (I prefer the disposables),Tim and turn decorating turntable, meringue powder (small can is all you need, but if you plan on making more icing than is needed for class I would get the larger one), Parchment paper, icing colors, piping gel (any color you want, but I got white so I could use it with any other color). I think that's it....hope this helps you.

When I took the Wilton 1 course my instructor suggested we get the case that has supplies instead of student kit 1. The case I bought had a greenish top to it. That way we wouldn't have to spend so much out of pocket.

If you really like to bake already and know you wil enjoy this. I would use it coupon to but the 101 peice kit. It will just about everything you will need for the 3 course. It sells for $129.95 with the coupon you will save more in the long run if you purchase everything seperate.

Definitely get the turntable, and also get a longer spatula than what comes in the student kit. That will make icing and smoothing your cake much easier. Lots of couplers, a cake leveler if you're planning on torting, and also the cake boards are very handy.

Welcome to CC- it's addicting!!

So I just did a comparison on buying everything seperate, the 101 kit and the 3 course kits

101 kit with coupon is $77.97 with 40% off coupon

Buy everything seperate $159.90

buy the 3 studnet kids by themselve 68.95

With all the things in the kits there will still be more items to buy but you get the most for your buck buying the kit I think.
Happy Shopping!

They will encourage you to buy all sorts of stuff. I never use my cake leveler, for instance. I know some do, but I just level with my serrated knife. If you plan on really getting into cake decorating then the 101 piece set is your best bet. Whatever you get, you'll end up needing something else. It's like one of Newton's Law's or something. icon_lol.gif

The disposable bags and parchment papers are best for learning the royal icing. Having extra tips of certain #'s are nice once you really get into it so you don't have to wash them while you're decorating. Like #21, #16, #104, among others. If they have the course books there, you can look through them and tell what you will need.

I hope you realize that you are on your way to addiction and they don't have 12 step programs for people like us. Careful at HL. That's where part of the addictions starts, especially with the 50% coupon. icon_lol.gif

It's amazing how many things I "needed" once I started getting into my classes! I didn't buy that 101 piece kit, but in retrospect, that would have been a great idea. My one tip is to also check Wal-Mart, if you happen to be there. I was surprised at how much Wilton stuff my local Supercenter had, and cheaper than Michael's. Nothing beats the 40% off coupon, of course, but if you don't have one, sometimes Wal-Mart had a better price. And I even found some things on clearance, like my flower scissors for $1! Happy Shopping!

I'm into night 3 of Wilton I. The first class I was told to only bring a pen and paper. The teacher told us what to bring to night 2 which was a lot of stuff, but a lot of it was from the student kit. I had so much stuff already, I didn't need to buy the kit. Make a list of supplies you already have and then work from there. I love it!

Ok...so I signed up for the class!!! WOOHOO!! I am sooo excited. I looked at the 101 kit but I allready have a lot of the things that were in it so I just bought the class kit and book. I did buy the storage carrying case thing. My DH even talked me into a character pan and I made that this weekend. It was the Friendly Lion. My DS LOVED it!! You can't see very well in the picture but my stars were getting much better by the end of it.

I am onto my last class of Wilton I and am still excited about this so I wanted to go onto Wilton 2. At Michaels, class I was 1/2 off which was the reason I signed up. Found out....if you sign up right away for the next class, it's also 1/2 off! If you wait, you pay full price. Just in case anyone was interested.

ShellBell I looked at your lion before I saw you'd posted it in the thread and it's adorable!!

If that's your first cake before classes then you're well on your way. And welcome to CC, it will become very useful really fast, especially when your hobby becomes an addiction that you can't get enough of!! icon_smile.gif

Has anyone ever started a topic on WHY we feel this is an addiction? I know I get my hands into EVERY craft, sport, etc., but this one has me hook, line, and frosting!!! I think it's because I see so many beautiful cakes that people do and I want to try them knowing I WILL do them someday. My family has certainly not complained since they reap the rewards of it. Three out of 7 of my kids don't even LIKE cake, but find they check out each one once it's decorated to give it a try.
