Are you covering the cake with BC or fondant? When I made my first wedding cake I covered the cake with buttercream and put ribbon around it and attached it at the ends on the back side of the cake. I attached the ribbons together with a dollop of BC. I didn't know of any other way to do it so I also would like to hear of any other ideas. With fondant I guess you could use a glue made out of gum arabic.

I had to hold the ends together whether they overlapped or "ends met" with a pin, the kind with the colored heads on them. I ended up pushing the ends of the ribbon into the fresh dollop of frosting just a little bit and holding it for a second or two to make sure it stayed. I'm sure there's a better way. Maybe misting some water on the cake would make the ribbon stick. I just now thought of that.
Gum Arabic is a white powder sold in cake decorating supply shops. You mix just a little bit of it together with water in a small container and let it sit for a while until it becomes "glue" consistency. It is edible so I use it to glue all sorts of stuff. You can use it on royal, colorflow, and fondant.
