Hello everyone.....I have the "Cake Decorating for the first time" book by Jaynie Maxfield. The chocolate cake recipe calls for 1/4 CUP of cinnamon. IS THAT RIGHT????? There is no pic. of her adding a 1/4 cup of cinnamon. I have never made a scratch chocolate cake before, but this seems like quite a lot. HELP!!!

Thanks. sarah icon_surprised.gif

icon_surprised.gif I would definitely wait for a reply on this one. I can't imagine a 1/4 cup of cinnamon in anything! I do a hummingbird cake that calls for 1 teaspoon for a three layer 9" cake. Here's a bump back to the top...

I don't have another version of the book either, but agree with Bethroze. That sounds like a LOT of cinnamon. I think it would be really bitter unless you're adding a LOT of sugar! Here's another bump back to the top!

I don't have that book or know but I have never in my life seen something with that much cinnamon even something cinnamon flavor! In a chocolate cake, no way. I assume it's 1/4 teaspoon.

1/4 TEASPOON would sound more like it! Wow....

CRAP! I think I am going to have to dump this (luckily it is only the dry ingredients) and restart. I HATE wasting stuff. ARG!!! GGRRR!!! Now I hope the rest of the stuff is printed correctly. I really hate trying new recipes, especially when I am hoping for a palatable outcome....know what I mean? icon_mad.gif

So, should I contact the editor of this book and report it? It sells on CC website too! I'm just a very new baker....so, this could have been a disaster! icon_sad.gif

I was trying to help you. I found a person who "reviewed" the book for Barnes and Noble who said the same thing ... but she didn't say how to correct it.
http://btobsearch.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&btob=Y&endeca=1&isbn=1402717237&itm=10
scroll down to her review.

With patience you might try to search the internet for the answer.

Is there a site you can find the recipe? Or can a number you can contact them? I dont know you can probably do a search. Try to post the name of the recipe and see if any one else responds to it and maybe they have tried it too.

Thanks for all the support folks....people are so nice here, I love it. So unlike the "real world!"

Anyway.....Ritzyfritz, thanks for the hug.....I'm trying to get these into the oven before "thing 3" gets up from her nap and "thing 1 and thing 2" become unruly!!!!

Little linda: Thanks for the link....I read her post, now I am rechecking my book......and it says to add 2 cups sugar. So, I think maybe only the cinnamon is the typo. Good Golly!

Thanks. I'll let ya'll know if it is good (with the corrected amt.) and will let you know if I contact the editor, et cetera. But, no time for that now. Gotta make cake!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Ok, I just put the cakes into the oven, and the batter was REALLY, REALLY runny. I hope this is going to be okay. I followed the directions, except for changing the amount of cinnamon and using butter instead of margarine. So.....in about 30 minutes.....we'll know. cross your fingers.

Are there other batters that start out really runny??

Yes, I have a chocolate cake that I make that has runny batter, and made me very nervous the first time I used the recipe. Turns out, it is my most favorite chocolate cake!

Here's hoping it turns out wonderful! Keep us posted! icon_smile.gif

Well, the cakes are out of their pans.....there is barely ANY for me to cut off the top to level/try icon_smile.gif. Most of my cakes always have a big ridge around the outside edge....no ridge with this. WOW. It tasted pretty good, but I only had a little sliver. Now, do I wait for it too cool completely before I wrap and store in the fridge for tmw? Also, I was thinking I would wrap in parchment paper first, then saran second. Thoughts? Does it matter??

LukeRubyJoy, as for the wrap, I don't think it matters. I'm glad your cake came out fine. I would write to the publisher telling them of the mistake. When I am not satisfied with a product, I write to the manufacturer. They usually send me coupons! Maybe the publisher will give you something!

Well, Thanks for the help everyone. We ate this cake tonight, and it was absolutely awesome! SSOOO moist. And with the filling (raspberry/currant) and icing (chocolate ganache) people said that they could have been eating this at a restaurant! (which did make me feel pretty good!) Anyway, I will try to post a picture here....if not, I will post to the gallery. THANKS!

Okay, not going to take the time to make it 800x800 as I need to finish my tortellini salad for pot-luck tomorrow. ARG! Maybe I will try.....Okay it worked, but the size difference made the cake look flatter than it is. It was 3 layer 8". The one I post to the gallery I hope will be a more accurate representation. icon_smile.gif

thumbs_up.gif Bravo!! Glad you made it through. See....it usually works out, doesn't it? But, at the moment of crisis it feels like it won't, huh? LOL!!!

Great job! Thanks for sharing!
