Hi, all,, something has been telling me all day to post this topic,, maybe someone will know something,, long shot i know.. but anyway,, Here's the story..
All my life i've heard about an aunt that I never knew. According to what me and my siblings have always been told she left when her kids were litte and no one ever knew where she went. Unbelievably this was over 37 years ago or there abouts, it happened in 1968 (i think). Her youngest and I were the same age which would have made him a baby, not even a year old, I don't think. This was my mothers sister and there were only the two of them. She had been in some branch of the military and I'm pretty sure she may have still been married at the time. Anyway, I've always wanted to try and research to see what may have happened, maybe we didn't know everything that was going on, maybe she was under some witness protection program, etc,,, all kinds of crazy thoughts have run through my mind over the years. And the fact that I had always been told that she truly adored kids and especially her own, it just never added up that she would've just left. Well the point to the whole post is for advice,,, where should I start looking,, how would I go about starting to research news or police reports during that time.. any advice is truly appreciated... Thank you in advance....
you can check local newspapers from that time at the library. im not sure what all is public records but you could check the police departments and see if any unsolved crimes involving a woman are still open. i would think if she was put into witness protection then her dh and kids would have been placed with her. im not sure what kind of info the military would give you if any but i guess it wouldn't hurt to try. good luck.
Sounds intriguing.
You could look into some geneaology sites and get information on how to do a search. You might be able to find marriage certificates that would at least give you a new last name to search for. You could also try doing a search on some of the military archive sites. You normally have to send a fee for records. Good luck. Keep us posted.

You can try reunion.com. It has many people looking for others. You can also use a link off that sight to be taken to US Search, where you can enter a name, age range, and location and they will do the search for you at a nominal fee (under $50) which compared to a PI might be cheaper.
It sounds like an interesting story! I wonder what the case is. If you have the money, you might be able to get a PI or perhaps do one of those people searches. Best of luck to you!
Thanks everyone for the tips/advice,, we did finally find her SS# a few months ago.. her husband and kids live in louisiana and what is strange is every so often my sisters and mother and I, usually about the same time, will start thinking about her again and what may have happened, ,, about 6 months ago I had been thinking about her out of the blue for no reason at all,, and i went to my moms one afternoon and she told me that her husband at the time had called and was wondering if she had ever heard from her over the years,, it was really weary,, very strange,, my mom had not talked to him in many many years. . Again, thanks everyone,, I will definitley keep posted of any new info,, Please say a prayer that my mom could have some closure as to whether or not her only sister is still living or if she will ever see her again after all these years.. which is my prayer,, I know it would make her soooo happy.
