I have an order due this weekend for 50 grad caps in bags. My question to anyone who has had done this before-what is the best way to bag them to ensure the tassle part doesn't break off? any suggestions would be a BIG help. thanks!

I had that problem with the tassel breaking off..so I made my cookies a little thicker.

Although it'd be a lot of work, you could cut off the tassle and pipe it up front, sorta to the side. Here's a cutter for just that:

I know you might not have time or want to buy an extra cutter.

If that's not an option for you, I think making the cookie a bit thicker is an excellent idea.

I've been looking for years for pieces of waxed cardboard for just that same reason. You know, the stuff that's in candybar pkgs, but thicker. I thought about posting the question. I'm afraid if I found a company that makes them I'd have to buy in bulk quantities and I'm just a hobbyist. For some special cookies, I wrapped pieces of cardboard in cake foil. Then bagged with matching ribbon. It was a lot of work! Looked nice, though.

I had the same problem and mine are 1/2 in thick. I found when I bagged them that I had to be very careful not to let the bag tighten against the cookie or to let anything touch the tassel at all.

I did about 50 of them a few weeks ago. I didn't have a problem with the tassel breaking off but my SIL (they were for her sister) said that a handful of them did break (tassel). She suggested putting bubble wrap in the box when I packaged them (not individually but in the big box). I also have been toying with the idea of some kind of cardboard backing. What if you cut out pieces of cardboard or cardstock and "glued" the wrapped cookie to it? I know it would be a ton of work but I think it would end the breakage problem. I don't think the cardboard would have to be food safe because it wouldn't touch the cookie. The cookie would already be wrapped.

Here's a couple suggestions. I just made 80 or so grad caps with tassles. When I got the cutter the tassle part was very slim so I pulled on the cutter to expand the width of that part. Also, if I ever have a cookie with smaller parts like that I always let them cool completely on the cookie sheet before taking them off. I think taking them off even when slightly warm compromises the strength of these smaller parts. Hope that helps. Also, my cookie are quite thick.
