what mediums would use use to ger this effect??

I would probably cover in black fondant and cut thin strips of light brown and put it over the black. Then I would airbrush it (if I had one icon_lol.gif ) with a darker brown color. I'm sure someone out there has a better idea.

I think it looks like tanish fondant with the groves carved out after its on the cake, then painted in with dark brown and touched up with a lighter/medium brown for depth.

Cover the cake in fondant, use a regular screw driver and make the indents in the fondant. Then take a paintbrush and paint in the lines. I have a stumpy cake in my photos, I used this method to make the lines.

I agree with Singsing. Use tan/brown fondant to cover the cake and make the grooves and dents and paint.
