You know there was a post like this one a while back... it was a toss up on the subject. I think it was something like half did and half bought one. I think this year I'm gonna buy one just so I don't have to do any work. icon_rolleyes.gif

I don't think it's bad to do your own cake. You'll get exactly what you want, and get to practice. Just as long as you WANT to bake right now!

I agree with that one- I dont see anything wrong with making your own cake if you know what you want and know you're dying to do it yourself. I have a twin sis so I'm lucky, I got to make 'our' cake and anyone who thought it was weird, well too bad, but to them I said, well I'm making my sister's cake LOL.
However, if you dont feel like making your own cake, it's your birthday- dont feel pressured to just because you're a cakemaker icon_cool.gif

I personally like to bake my own cake....gives me time to practice something before my nieces b-day the next week!

yeah good practice too. Hey happy birthday to everyone who has a special day coming up!

Oh and other reason is ok to do your own cake is because you probably have a long list of ideas you'd like for yourself and not like you're going to ask someone else to do for you, right? LOL The list of cake ideas I want to do for myself, or nobody in particular, is just about as long as the list for actual people I know LOL (like the cake I'm doing for my niece next week I'd rather do for myself but I dont want to wait half a year to do it LOL)

My birthday was Tuesday, and I made my own cake, because I wanted to practice and I would have received dry store bought otherwise. And, I go one step further, my Mom's birthday is tomorrow, and we are having a joint celebration on Saturday. She is making my an ice-cream pie and I am making her a cake. We'll each have to have both, nothing like cake and ice cream!! YUM!

If you are throwing your own party, I say make your own. If someone else is throwing your party, then don't bother.

I'm torn on this topic as well. My 30th birthday is in December and my sorority is throwing a holiday party the same day as my birthday. So I'm thinking I should make my own cake but then not make my own cake b/c of two different occassions.

Good luck on your decision.

I don't really like to eat cake. I just like to decorate them icon_wink.gif So absolutely YES I want to make my own birthday cake every year! In fact, our 25th wedding anniversary is coming up next month. Our kids are throwing us a party, and there's no way in the world I'd let someone else make our cake. But that's just me.

It would be even stranger if you didn't make your cake. You're a cake decorator and you'd get a cake from somebody else?

Well, if you have a friend who also decorates cakes, then maybe, if she didn't know about your birthday or offer, you could maybe solicit her (wink, wink...maybe, maybe) icon_smile.gif Otherwise, make it if you want, don't if you don't want. I wouldn't feel obligated...but if you want to, tell people, "It's my birthday, and I'll make my cake if I want to!!" (sung to the tune of "It's my party, and I'll cry if I want to").
