What is the best way to get your frosting to look super smooth on a cake? I will be using the Wilton Buttercream and want it to look as smooth on the cake as possible. Suggestions?????

icing it upside down will help and I use wax paper to smooth it out. It seems to work really well. Also, when you do the crumb coat, you'll need a thinner consistancy icing. Then you need to thicken it up some to do the actual cake. If your cinsistancy is too thin to ice, it won't smooth very easily.

Also, make sure that your icing is smooth, without a bunch of air whipped into it. Airbubbles make pits and bumps when you're frosting.

The way it is taught in the Wilton course is to wait for your butter cream to crust over, then place a piece of wax paper over your cake and then smooth it out with a large spatula. Then remove the wax paper. You can only do that with crusting bc.

I have also tried it with a hot spatula. But I am still working on getting my icing really smooth. Good Luck! icon_biggrin.gif

I have been using a crusting Buttercream - ice the cake then wait 7 minutes, use a Viva paper towel, smooth side down, place it on your cake and run your hand over it to smooth it out. This usually works well.

I haven't tried the wax paper method, but will next time.

What's been working for me is putting a thin layer of BC on first, let sit for about 5 minutes, then put on another coat of BC, then smooth with VIVA paper towels!!!

I was reading on another thread about how to get super smooth BC--- the lady, Sharon I think her name is said that she uses the Viva paper towel method, and then once smoothing that way... does it again with just regular paper-- white computer paper--- everyone that tried it raved about how smooth the cakes turned out on that thread....

I think its called "My tips for butter cream" --something like that on the cake decorating forum.

use a crusting buttercream.. after icing wait 15-20min or untill cake is crusted.. then go over with a VIVA paper towel, and a fondant smoother.

Does it have to be a VIVA paper towel? If so, what is the difference between VIVA and other paper towels??

Following the earlier thread noted here, I started using copy paper and it works great for me! I do like the idea of the fondant smoother, too, so thanks for sharing that tip queenamy (and congratulations on your soon to be addition!).

Yippee for me, too, I think this post n=bumps me to a new level of CC addiction!

It does have to be Viva because Viva is really smooth unlike other paper towels that have ridges and bumps. Viva is also nice and thick and sturdy...almost like working with cloth.

Also wanted to add about Viva paper towel..
is its not the same as using the wax paper because viva is alot more flexable and you wont get any dents on your cake.

Viva, is by far the only paper towel ive seen with out any markings on it.. which those kinds will leave markings on the icing
