Help!! Need To Determine Size Of Cake To Make!!

Okay...I am making the birthday cake for my grandmother's birthday on Saturday. She will be 91 and this is really the first cake I will be doing for something other than for my kids and husband to eat. What size do you ladies use for a double layer cake? I am making a lemon cake and want to frost the middle but can't determine what size pan to use so that I have a nice height to the cake. HELP!!!!! Suggestions please!
So long as you use 2in deep pans, a 2 layer cake will be around 4in deep. How many will it need to serve?
It needs to serve 9-10 people and I would like everyone to have a nice piece of cake.
A two-layer 8" round cake will be plenty, then. One box mix easily fills 2 8" rounds. Or, you could go with one of the 'cake extender' recipes here, and have 3 somewhat thinner layers with 2 layers of filling -- and it will be even more dramatically "tall". (I tend go for drama whenever I can
)
I agree with the 8in, but I would suggest torting both layers so you end up with 4 layers of cake and 3 of filling - yum! Good luck!
An 8" is what I thought too. Now...is the 8" pan that is about 2" deep enough or do I need the one that is 3" deep????? I never knew there were so many pans! Yikes!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! I love this place and you are all so helpful.
