In Need Of Dusting Information...

I have been looking at sites that sell Luster Dust and Petal Dust. They say that these items are not considered food items. What product is safe to paint/brush onto fondant?
I also have fondant items that will be placed on the cake, but not consumed. Any help that you have to offer will be greatly appreciated! ![]()
If you are brushing the dust on the items that are being taken off then they are fine to use.
If you want to use the dusts on the cake that will be consumed, you should use powdered food coloring. I use crystal colors They are expensive but very vibrant colors. check out www.sugarpaste.com
I think that is the right site.
If the petal dusts are consumed in small quanities they shouldn't hurt you they are considered non toxic.
I've heard them described as non-toxic, which means they won't hurt you, however, they are a non food item which means they have no nutritional value to them. Cardboard is also non toxic, and eating it won't kill you, and I think it has very low calorie content, too! LOL
My local cake supply says they are perfectly fine if consumed.
How many of you eat the gold and silver dragees? Its hard to find those anymore!
Luster and petal dusts are big in Eroupe and people eat them all the time. Of course their laws are different than ours. I look at it this way, if all the pros use it all the time here, then it should not be a problem. They are non-toxic like Lambshack said (except for highlighter dusts which should not be eaten) so it is like eating the crayons that every did when they were a kid.
And then I look at it this way, even if I painted an entire cake with dust, someone is not going to eat the whole thing themselves--they will have a small piece--a small amount which won't do anything. Others will argue that over time it may, been then I think so will that cell phone attached to our ear every day.
But how often to people eat luster painted cakes?
There are edible dusts out there that are FDA approved, but I don't know much about them. Maybe someone can eleborate on that.
Speaking of dusts - I have pearl dust I was going to use on a Dinosaur Cake - to make the eyes and teeth stand out. Using butter cream icing to decorat - how do I apply the dust ? Straight from the jar with a brush, or do I need to mix it with liquid first? Thanks
I read in one of my books that colored chalks were used.... I was baffled thinking they must be refering to a specific, edible cake decorating chalk but could find no such thing.
Then I looked further and they said "the non-toxic kind used with scrapbooking".
I checked on Scrap shelf and sure enough - I had some.
Can this be right?

With BC, I would mix it with vanilla or lemon extract or vodka, gin or everclear and paint it on. It is a bit difficult to get dry luster on BC. It can be done, but prepare for a gummy brush afterwards.

I know people use colored chalks to color gumpaste flowers. I haven't heard of anyone using them directly on cakes, though.
Ok if you look at the llink below, you will see a note not to use certain dusts
NOTE: those colors indicated by * contain Iron Blue or Chromium Oxide and must be labeled "for decorative use only".
I use this to know what is ok for cookies, cakes and what I can only use for decoration use.
