Is it wrong to use canned frosting if I am not doing any 3D decorating? Will it crust?

It is certainly not a sin. But, it won't crust and you will have a hard time using it to pipe decorations unless you add more powdered sugar. I think lots of folks use it to ice cakes with.

It's too soft and very sweet, not my favorite. I used once in a wilton class, because I was out of time, and I really hated it, all my decorations were runny.

There is nothing wrong with canned icing. You should be able to plain ice and perhaps do a simple border. You might be able to tighten it up with more powdered sugar but it may be really sweet. You will not be able to do things like making roses with it. BC is not hard to make and will keep in a sealed container in the frig for a couple of weeks. You will need a mixer though to make it. If you intend to do more decorating techniques you will need a stiffer icing.

or if you want to do decorations with canned icing, wilton sells deco icing, it's a bit pricy, but at least it's not runny like dunkin hines or pilsbury is.

Sin........I'm still thinking. I think homemade icing is the only way to go - I have guys that I have taught to make it and they will give use the other. You just can't beat the taste! I can make a batch of buttercreme for $2.86 so you really can't argue about the price.

My hubby likes the canned stuff like Duncan Hines better! I can't decorate with it, so don't use it very often. A couple times I've used it as the base, then decorated with a homemade batch though. Most the time I just use a crusting buttercream and dh just has to deal with it! lol.
If you want to try Wilton's canned stuff you might have better luck. Not sure what the consistency is like, but might be worth a try. If you're just trying to save the time and mess of making your own. icon_smile.gif

HI I am a canned frosting cheater! And everyone asks me for the recipe so it must taste fine.

I use the duncan hines creamy white frosting. I choose this because it is white white, and not off white in color. Then I add some crisco, again, the white, not butter flavor, and some clear wilton vanilla, and lots of powdered sugar. I whip it all together until I have a good consistency. If I put too much powdered sugar, I will add a tiny bit of milk until it is how I want it. I use this on cakes all the time and it works out perfectly.

Good luck!
