Just popped a question into a different thread but my paranoia is increasing as my cake's "due date" approaches-does anyone have some ways to just give a light shimmery look to fondant with luster dust?? I've never used it, have played with it this week, with & without extracts, but not vodka yet, & think I would prefer using it dry. I read somewhere that a blusher or powder brush would work-I'm afraid of streaking the color. And of course there's the whole fondant on a square cake issue-think I've got it sorted out but am really hoping this all works! I guess I'm just still wondering about refrigeration over night before the cake is delivered icon_confused.gif TIA for any help anyone can pass along!!

it is easy once u get the hang of it saranac...i used fondant with all my cakes and used dusting powders with my third..i prefer to use sparkle powder coz they give the most sparkles...i used fresh lemon juice and i did not have any problem..if your powder gets too dry u can always squeeze a drop or two..here is the cake i used the powder with..

I have read on other threads that you should not refrigerate fondant as it will get gooey...I think as long as you keep the cake in a cool, dry place it should be fine over night.

I use luster dust all the time, but I mix it with vodka (since it evaporates so very quickly) and paint it on with a small paint brush- you can even mix it with lemon juice. I have seen it done dry with brushes as well, but I am not so sure that the color holds as well or can be as controlled like when it is wet.

do u have AC in your house or your room?when i make cakes covered with fondant, i usually store them in my room overnight...refrigeration "might" cause moisture to get into your fondant so, maybe not...have not tried putting it in the refrigerator so i could not say i am 100% sure..

I refridgerate every cake I make including fondant. It will sweat if it is humid but that will be fine because the cake is shimmery anyway.

If you want to give the fondant a shimmer then the easiest way is to roll out your fondant and, before putting it on the cake, get a blusher brush dip it into your dust and tap it off and really gently sweep it over the fondant. If you paint the dust on you'll get a thicker look, which is hard to get non-streaky.

I use a large brush - sort of blusher brush size and do it dry. You can sweep it or swirl the brush (think fingerprinting on CSI!!!! icon_lol.gif ) Find the best way to suit you and the brush you have. I find that it doesn't streak that way

Wow-thanks to you all for the useful suggestions-the blusher brush idea would probably give me the look I'm after-not as opaque as mixing with vodka or lemon juice, perhaps. I'll play more with the wet version as well-see if I can fine tune a little. As for dusting the fondant first, then placing fondant on the cake, I imagine I would just be sliding my hands below the fondant to move it, not rolling back onto a rolling pin?? Does anyone ever place the fondant on a larger circle first, then slide off onto the cake, the "Wilton" way, I guess. I may err on the side of keeping the cake out of the fridge, especially b/c of the dust-when I got up this AM, our house was pretty cool after having the windows open through the night-maybe that will be enough vs. the fridge. And then, how little I have to rearrange &/or toss into beer coolers!

Also, fantastic cake snap you included, marj-the colors are so vibrant! You did a beautiful job! I really like the look of the pink-so eye catching!

Additionally, I hope I'm not worring for nothing-I almost wonder if I should have tried a different type of dust-petal, etc. I'll keep my fingers crossed that I can get a very subtle effect with a powder that can come out as strong as it does!!
