... from a lady in New York wanting a cake. She left me her name and # and said she got my name from another lady. I don't know either of these women. I've asked family and noone knows who they are. Why would someone in NY call me in MD??? Maybe she has family or a vacation home down here, but it just has me concerned. When I returned her call, she works at the metropolitan transportation authority. I left a msg for her to call me back. I'm just nervous that maybe I'm being set up. I don't advertise. I don't have a license or a health dept inspection. I do this for friends and family and would like to eventually do this as my own business, but not now. am I being paranoid??

I'm not sure either! icon_surprised.gif See if you can get in touch with her, ask her if she is going to be in your area, etc. If you get the "gut feeling" that something isn't right follow it! Just tell her your not in business as of yet and your not able to do cakes for anyone other than family at this point.

Can't explain how she got your name and number but maybe she needs a cake for a family member in your town. I live in Florida and order cakes from a lady in Indiana for my family. Just proceed cautiously and if you feel uncomfortable when you talk to her then bow out graciously.

When you talk to her, ask her point-blank (but politely), "May I ask who referred you to me?" If she hem-haws at that, I would definetly be suspicious!

I think its not even worth returning the call. If its through a friend then i am sure they will contact you to see what the problem is and if its something fishy then you havent even acknowledged her inquiry.

I got a call from Oklahoma the other day inquiring about my wedding cake pricing and that was the last I heard of it. On monday I got a call from a lady in Dallas, TX wanting to order a cake, but as it turns out it's for her MIL who lives here. Strange how these things happen.
