My first wedding cake the bride wants buttercream icing with a ribbon at the bottom of each tier. Two Questions...

Will the ribbon color leak onto the buttercream icing? If so, is there a way to keep this from happening?

How do I attach the ribbon to the icing?

Any additional advice?

You can attach the ribbon around the cake, and then, at the ends (ribbon ends) you can put royal icing to be your glue and keep the ribbon in its place.

Depending on the type and color of ribbon, the grease from the buttercream may leak through the ribbon and/or the color from the ribbon may bleed onto the buttercream. To prevent this from happening, try cutting wax paper the same width as the ribbon, and then hot glue or attach it with royal icing to the ribbon. Then, attach the wax paper-backed ribbon to the cake with buttercream or royal icing. Hope this helps! icon_smile.gif

I use a heavier satin ribbon and don't have much problem with it bleeding through, I go easy on the bc glue.

I forgot to say that if you are concerned about the type of ribbon you could also use Royal Icing, it of course has no grease in it.

Thank you all for your help. I bought the ribbon today, and I'm doing a test case on some buttercream icing. So far it is not bleeding through icon_smile.gif If it does, I'll try the wax paper method.

I just read recently that you can iron the wax paper to the ribbon ..
