This may sound like a dumb question, but what exactly is a dummy cake and when would you use one?

It is a cake form made out of styrofoam. It is used to practice decorating like borders, stringwork, etc. Anything that you would do with a real cake. I recently did a post asking a question about what to do with the dummy in terms of preparing it for use and got some great responses. You should be able to do a search under my user name.

Hope that helps - Joan

Hello

Beyond using cake dummies for practicing.. they can also be used for show cakes / display cakes.
Use the dummies to cover & decorate like a real cake so you can keep them on display for months; they can be cleanedup, washed & used again.
Dummies are also used with real cakes: ex: a small 2-tiered cake (real) would be placed on top of a dummy cake to give it height & make the overall cake look more impressive...the guests are treated to a beautiful large cake, & the wedding pictures will show an impressive cake for the cake cutting images.
Reception halls that 'rent out wedding cakes' use dummy cakes which are decorated with fondant & royal icing.
hope this answers your question
ciao
