I had my first attempt at "painting" on a MMF covered cake using food coloring and vodksa this weekend. If it tells you anything my own mother called it the ugly cake.
So for those of you that have done this, how do you paint without showing brushstrokes. I've used watercolors on canvas before and heard that this technique was similar but I'd have to disagree. At least with watercolors you can add a bit more water to fade the color for shading but with the vodka and mmf it just made a mess. Thanks in advance for the advice!
I have used my gel paste before when making stems and certain looks. A good brush is important. Sometimes I like a little bolder color that doesn't look watered down. I have done this also on the edible sheets. I will print them with a black outline and white and then come in and actually paint the picture.
Thanks missyek and cupcake. I'm pretty sure I have good brushes. I picked them based on similar qualities I would if I were using them for actual painting. I'll try using more vodka and less gel next time and see how that works. I know that usually when painting color on fondant that you want a fast drying base like vodka but for the effect I was looking for would there be something else that wouldn't dry as fast but would be able to set overnight? I was going for a more seamless color fade or blend rather than distinct lines.
