I buy my red and black fondant, since it is such a pain to make. My store bought stuff I brush it with veg oil of crisco to get it shiny. Like my dog's nose, tongue and eyes

Thank you. I just don't know where I would buy it. Is it expensive?

I did it this past weekend. You make chocolate mmf and color it black either with Americolor Super black or it works with Wilton. Not sure what you mean by "dull" but I rolled mine out with crisco and it didn't seem dull at all. it was a true black. Also it will darken as it sits so you may not immediately see black.

for the black fondant I used on the cake in my pictures I added the black to the melted marshmallows before adding PS, didn't have anyproblems with it.

oh also if you put lots of black food coloring, the mmf may start to tear easily. i just added a little corn syrup to help it regain its elasticity. worked like a charm. you just have to be patient and keep kneading it and working with it and it will eventually do what you want it to do.

I havent tried it yet but I know there was an older thread on here about adding hersheys special dark cocoa powder to the fondant when you are making it and it turns black without having to knead in any color. I cant remember how much to add but I am guessing it was about 1/4 cup substituted for the ps. HTH

i have an odd question that i've wondered about over the years... can you brush fondant with piping gel to get that glossy sheen? just an odd thought icon_smile.gif

This is what I did for the pink and black cake in my photos. Kneading in the cocoa powder will give you a nice brown base. You will still have to add black coloring gel (just not as much). The cocoa powder also gives the MMF a really great chocolate flavor.

After I color my MMF black I lightly "paint" it with luster dust and lemon extract. It gives a nice sheen.

On my phantom of the Opera cake, I mixed the black Americolor with chocolate MMF for the jacket. I wanted the lapels on the jacket shiny so I brushed just the lapels with a tiny bit of shortening.

OKay, one more question, what do you guys use to stick some fondant decorations to the fondant on the cake?

If the cake is newly covered (fondant is still soft), use a dab of water or piping gel for glue.

If not, use royal icing.
