I am making a children's birthday cake. Some of the decorations are made of royal icing, (the cake is for Sunday) when should I make the decorations?

I know I can make the cake anytime and frost it on Saturday. And decorate it on Sunday Morning/ Saturday night. I just need to know about making the extra decorations. Any help would be great!

They will take a couple days to dry. Get started. Keep them at room temperature.

Do I store them at room temparture the whole time? Or cover them on a storage container?

Room temp - but dust free. You could have made them last year and they would still be ok.

Really? Royal icing doesn't have a shelf life?

nope royal icing once piped can keep for months if not years. As long as they're dried properly and are stored somewhere dry and dust free they keep forever

I worked at a bakery years ago and she also made roses with her left over royal icing. The had this big box that had a thin sheet of foam in the bottom and it was full of roses on little marshmallows and toothpicks - some time she wouldn't even have to make roses - she would just go to the box............

I still have dummy cakes that are at least 10 years old. The stuff lasts forever if kept properly.
