Ok, so I tried to do a FBCT last night using the instructions from CC. I didn't get started on it early enough and decided to call it a night. I didn't put the layer of BC the same color as the cake on the back of it. I just froze it. I was wondering what might happen tonight when I try to cover the back in BC after it has already been frozen. Also, has anyone used the piping gel tubes to do the outline?
I have no clue. I did a FBCT last night too. I hate doing them. They never seem to turn out very good for me. I have often thought that too, why you have to put icing the same color on the back of it? Hope someone else can help you out. Here's a bump.
SweetieD-
I did a transfer last night also and didn't put the backing on until this morning. I had smoothed the transfer itself prior to putting it in the freezer so I just added a layer of white BC to it and it worked just fine for me. The layer of white hardened quickly because the transfer was so cold but it spread and then I put a piece of wax paper over it, smoothed it with my hand and popped it back int he freezer for about half an hour. I am finishing the cake later tonight and will post the completed job when I finish.

I am no expert on the FBCT, but I have done a couple of them. I think it wil be fine if you put the frosting on tonight. I usually freeze mine a little anyway before putting that layer on. Did you smoosh the icing down first though ? (they tell you to use the spatula to settle the icing, I put a piece of paper towel over the back and use my fondant smoother.) If you didnt do that, I am not sure how your results would turn out. I'd probably wait until it defrosts and do that step if you didnt.
Okay, I just did a FBCT this past weekend the Kappa Alpha Psi cake I have in my pictures. I think the directions do not tell you, this, but what I have found is that you can let the BC dry or crust as you would on a crumb coating. So what I recommend is to go ahead and add the BC to your transfer even after freezing, it should be fine. For future when you are not in a hurry, pipe out your outline and let it dry and then fill in and let dry and then cover with like color of cake and freeze. Also I dampened the cake with water (just a tad) before adding my transfer that made it stick really good when I was removing paper from transfer. Hope this helps. ![]()
I have only done one of these, (Harley cake in my photos) but I didn't put the extra icing on the back. I didn't want the transfer to be to thick. I did freeze it between 2 pcs of waxed paper for 2 days before I used it though. I'm not sure what the extra icing is supposed to do other than make the transfer a little stronger.
When I do mine I never do a white layer on the back. I just use the icing I am using to make sure it is thick enough.
Ok, so my FBCT didn't work out very good. It did not want to peel off of the wax paper and it smeared a bit trying to do so. I got most of it onto the CCC, but it did not look pretty. I figured there was no way to salvage it, so I filled in the shape with a star tip in matching BC and re-outlined it with piping gel. My CCC kept having dips between cupcakes. I thought I got them as close together as possible, but maybe my BC was not thick enough. I really thought it was going to be ruined after the FBCT problem, but I did my best to fix it and I think it came out pretty good considering! I made this for two of my husbands buddies who are summer interns at his work and they are both going back to college next week.
