90 Degrees, High Humidity, No A/c, Hot Oven

I grew up in Albuquerque, NM and now live in El Paso (it was 106 here yesterday btw), and didn't even know people went without AC's until my friend in Seattle complained about a heat wave they had last summer. I was shocked
when she said she didn't have one. Now reading about all you brave souls who don't have one... I have a swamp cooler & TWO window units (on in the dining/kitchen) area, and have to bake cakes early or risk baking myself and the DC! ![]()
We use the A/C year round at my house. I live in central Texas; we have four seasons here: Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer and Christmas.
Usually by this time of the year, we've been over 100 degrees for at least 12 days straight...but THIS year, its been pouring rain every day, so we haven't gotten over 95. Besides the rain, it's pretty nice.

Here in North Dakota we have 3 seasons, WINTER, Spring and almost winter. We've been known to have snow storms in May that can shut school down. I tell my husband I haven't seen a real summer since I was 12 and we left Kentucky, he says it gets hot here but I don't think 85 counts.
People around here are often seen when it's 40 out and the snow is still melting in shorts and sandals. ![]()

in Idaho and washington state we have winter- still winter- almost winter- and construction ![]()
I live in Florida's panhandle and I don't think I could survive without air conditioning. I lived in Germany for two years without air conditioning and even though it got up to 100 it was bearable because the humidity was so low. I feel for all of you bakers without air--try and stay cool somehow---maybe take a dive in a pool--go inside and bake and then repeat!!
I live in SOUTHEAST WASHINGTON and it is DESERT here -- hot dry windy. I FINALLY have central air! Whoo hoo!!
You'd a thought we won the lottery with that!! We have the 4 seasons -- I like it -- And yes, construction e-v-e-r-y w-h-e-r-e and its nuts!
SPF-70 sunblock for me! ![]()
I dont know how you all do it. The air in my car is on the fritz and I about die in the 45 minutes that I am driving down the road to get home from work and that is with the windows down. It is in the 90's with about 90% humidity. The air in my house stays a comfortable 73ish. When it gets bad we go to the "basement" where it is tiled, lower than the unit, and there are no windows. It helps everybody cool down.
When I read this subject line on the main page I thought we were playing a game of Jeopardy... I buzzed in and said, "What's it like in hell, Alex?"
I'll tell you, I'm in the midwest, so not only does it get hot... it gets hot and wet. Humidity is evil. I live in a house that was built in 1904, so we rely on window units. But I am not afraid to run them! They get a workout! When I have to bake, I close off the kitchen so the heat has to stay in there, then I throw the stuff in the oven and dive into the livingroom where the AC is cranked!! We are fixing up this house, so it's my plan to add central air as soon as possible. But you know... that can get expensive too, especially in a house this big!
Haha BakeNShake says...

Um, I would LOVE to but um... don't have one of those either! HAHA. Apparently, I am being neglected. Ha.
P.S. It's 73 right now. The rest of the week is supposed to be in the low 70s. ![]()

I lived in Upstate NY (5yrs)& Central TX(5yrs) and I had central air & heat in both places I move back to Maine and I thought I wouldn't need it WRONG!! The humidity is the killer if it wasn't for that I would be ok - Good thing I live on the water or I'd be in melt down mode!!
I live in Maine as well and the humidity here can be a killer in the summer. This past week was 95 and high humidity. I use window units-have one in just about every room except the kitchen-although I maybe getting a portable unit for it. My sister has central air-don't care for it-I think it is the "humetically(sp?) sealed" thing-I am very claustrophobic. I have to have a window open-in the car with the AC cranked up, in the winter-you name it.
In the summer I try to bake as early as possible-3-5 in the am to take advantage of a "cooler" period.
