Ok call me an idiot but my no fail sugar cookies failed lol I made the dough yesterday (1/2 of the recipe) and I just took it out of the fridge and tried to roll it but all I have is a crumbly mess on my rolling board. Any suggestions as to what went wrong? I cut the recipe in half exactly. Please is there any way to salvage the dough? Thanks

Take your dough and put it in the microwave for about 7 seconds. That is what I had to do with mine so that I could work with it. Otherwise it was really crumbly.

Thank you ever so much sunflower I have them cut and in the freezer while I wait for the oven to heat. I thought the dough seemed a little crumbly when I made it yesterday but figured it would be ok once I refrigerated it. Glad I didnt have to ditch the whole batch. Will let you know how it goes once they're baked.

The first time I made this dough, it was crumbly too. Things I've learned:

Always use ex-large eggs
Use un-salted butter
Knead dough a little before you put in fridge

These are a few. Once I only put one cup of butter in it, mixed all the dry stuff in and was going crazy, cuz it was so dry. I realized I only put one cup of butter in. I thought, what they hey....I added the other cup of butter and the dough came out fine. I guess you could call it- fool proof too!

Good luck

Well got the cookies done FINALLY lol they turned out pretty darn good. I nuked the dough for about 9 mins and was able to roll them. I used an egg white for the meringue powder that worked good. I know about the egg white theory but figured since they would be eaten soon and not left outside in the heat it would be ok for this one time. I used medium consistency icing and did not have to outline and freehanded it with my small offset spatual worked great just need som practice lol

will try to post a pic as soon as hubby can take a pic with his webcam for me. My wooden coffee sticks (xtra long) worked great in the oven. I sure learned alot and I thank all of you for your help. This place is FANTASTIC. I think next time I will ice the sides as well. I just like the look better.
