Use your vanilla buttercream recipe and add 1/2 to 1 cup of sifted cocoa to it (this will depend on how chocolaty you want the frosting). Increase your liquid in small amounts until you get the proper consistency.

Add extra vanilla extract and a small amount of almond extract will make it even better. Just be sure to to sift the cocoa through a fine sieve.

Good luck.

My favorite:

2 lb. confect sugar
1 cup shortening
1/2 can choc frosting
1 Tbsp. cocoa
1/2 cup water
1 tsp butter flav
1 tsp almond flav
1Tbsp pure vanilla
Cream shortening and choc frosting. Add cocoa. I put flavorings in a 1/2 cup measuring cup and finish filling with water. Add 1/2 confect sugar and 1/2 water mixture mix a little and add balance of sugar and water. finish mixing well
Very easy and is great for decorating.
Hope this helps.

I always add cocoa or melted chocolate to my regular buttercream icing. How much will depend on how chocolatey you want the icing.

I usually add around 3/4ths cup cocoa powder. When I do the melted chocolate I have done baker's sqaures - 4-8 oz, 12oz bag of chocolate chips, or a bag of Wilton chocolate candy melts.

You will probably need to add some extra liquid to your recipe since adding the chocolate seems to dry it out.

I think the chocolate buttercream dream recipe is terrific. My experience using the melted chocolate method has been much better than the cocoa powder in terms of icing consistency.
