I want to decorate my cake base with royal icing but I need to transfer a design onto my cake base first. I was thinking about tinted piping gel but I'm wondering if this will have an effect with the royal icing?

What exactly is it you want to do? If I cover a cake i royal icing I normally scribe the design ont the dried icing using a pin then use royal to pipe the scribed design. YOu can use piping jel on top of royal. If you can tell us exactly what you are trying to do then we can better advise
Well, I'm trying to transfer a design onto my cake board and then cover it using royal icing. The only thing I could think of was using piping gel to transfer my design.
I've never tried piping gel transfer onto royal then finish with royal icing inside the piping gel borders? Seems like piping gel fill inside the piping gel borders would definitiely be fine be fine or chocolate or buttercream transfer, or pin prick or kopykake outline....
do you have time to experiment with your idea and let us all know? It seems like it might slide putting the royal ontop of the piping gel ![]()
If you're covering your cake in royal. make sure the icing is dry. draw your design onto a piece of parchment paper then either use a needle tool or a pin to scratch the outline through the paper into the top of the icing or flip the paper over use a NON TOXIC pencil to draw over the outline on the reverse side of th paper. Flip it back the right way put it on top of your cake and draw over the outline again. Which ever method you use a faint outline will be left on the cake for you to outline and fill in with your royal icing.
I'm actually trying to cover my cake ~board~, not my cake. So it's the cake drum I'm trying to decorate and then I'll place my cake on top of that.

Cake drums can be decorated in the same way as a cake. cover with a thin layer of royal or fondant (to match your cake covering if possible) once its dry use the method I described above to transfer your design
