Oh! Well I can see how it would be better to do them in clay because it doesnt squish back at you went you scuplt it like gumpaste does! But I dont see how the US would allow it on top of a cake unless there is some kind of plate under it so that it doesnt touch it. Clay isnt food safe. Thats why I thought it might be cold porcelain. I know a lot of people in South America use it for that reason.
I always put all cake toppers on a plate or something to keep the frostng from sticking to them--and it helps to keep them level. THe only thing I don't plate, of course, is the initials.
But if you think about it, alot of people will just stick cut flowers into cake. Not thinking if they have been sprayed with chemicals or that anything will leech out of the flowers into the cake. Just my opinion.
