Do any of you get these anymore? I mean, how common is this?

There was a young boy just tonight trying to sell me some educational books for my children.

I told him I wasn't interested, but he tried again. He showed me all of my neighbors names, etc. that were buying them from him. He'll be back in Sept. to deliver them.

But, I told him I just couldn't do it.

He was from another country, I can't really remember where. But, he was a college student. and even had his student id with him; and some girl with him, he called her a supervisor, but I'm thinking maybe a "host" while he's here for 4 months.

Anyway, does anyone ever get "salesmen?" If so, what do you do about it? I mean, how trusting can we really be? And, if we don't want their product, how do we handle it if they don't like that? (his mood really changed when I refused)

Im in Melbourne Australia, we do get a few international students sellign stuff door to door, they can be quite rude when you tell them you're not interested. They sell mobile phones, new phone plans, cable, etc. Not long ago, one of the came around and asked my husband how much we spent on our internet connection and telephone line, hubby wouldnt tell him. Then he was saying how we should get cable tv, and hubby explained that we spent most of our time on the pc, and we wouldnt watch it. and he kept insisting, until hubby told him, not interested, and closed the door. He just wouldnt leave.
We also get locals selling movie packages etc. It's not often, but it happens a few times every year.

I used to get those kids trying to sell things, but it is not real common anymore. I have more problems with automated computer calls, and telemarketeers. I have tried the don't call list but doesn't seem to work. I just hang up. Or I might have someone call and ask for me by my first name like they are a friend. I hate that.

I get a few kids trying to sell magazine subcriptions to help towards their education....not much of anything anymore except the odd set of young men who are mormon or Jehovah Witness that come to the door.I just tell them I am Catholic!

I had a couple of college students come too trying to sell books. They had some interesting things but I can't see spending the money for the prices they were asking. I think you can often find a lot of similar books for 1/3 that price at the big chains, online, or at teaching stores. Although, according to his list a lot of people in my area seemed to be buying them.

You can probably go to your town or city hall and they may provide a sticker to place on your door--"NO SOLICITORS pursuant to Lenexa code 443" or similar. The sticker is free.

Of course it doesn't keep them all away. I would never hold elementary or High School Students to that --or girl/boy scouts.

After you spend triple the amount for cookie dough, or 2 yr subscription to magazines, etc, you may eventually just be honest with them and tell them you don't have the money for it at the time, or you have all the mags or cookie dough you can read/eat.

No matter how many of your neighbors bought from them, more neighbors probably said, "No, Thank you". Believe me, going from door to door, they can be no stranger to rejection.

There is a no call list in the US and also a way to get your name off junk mail lists--they work!

I'm home all day long and I would say that I get someone knocking on the door a minimum of 2-3 times every week. I get such a range of salespeople....... magazines, religious, meat, newspapers, candy, etc.... I NEVER EVER open the door to anyone unless I'm expecting someone. You can never be too careful...... too many nutjobs out there!

We get em all. From pushy salespeople to all the religious folks.

Best one was a older guy with a fistful of some religious pamphlets rang the bell and my hubby answered. The guy pointed to our rather large collection of gargoyles and dragon statuary in the front walkway and asked my husband if he knew that those were supposed to ward off evil and my hubby said yes, that he was fully aware of it. The guy then proceeded to ask if they worked icon_confused.gif , my hubby looked him straight in the eye and said "Obviously not, since you are standing on my doorstep interrupting my dinner!"

We also got an older gentleman who had wandered away from the Assisted care/Alzheimers home way down the road from us and gotten lost. He kept telling me that he had escaped over the wall from the military facility, was tired and wanted to go back. It was his FIRST day at the home and his safe-return bracelet had not been activated. I felt so bad for him, I invited him in to rest while I called the home and after much insisting on their part that they don't lose patients, they sent some staff members for him.

It often depends on what time of day these people show up. I'll usually at least try to figure out what they're selling or advertising. We have bought educational books for our kids and they're actually pretty cool. I've bought coupons type books before. Most of the people though are selling magazine subscriptions and I simply tell them we orcer them through our kids school or girl scouts.

But, we have a dog because I had a salesman get rude with me once. Now we have a scary looking, deep barking dog that scares the poop out of most people. What they don't know is that he's harmless LOL, but he does the job.

I've also had my carpets cleaned three times by Kirby people. I get a real kick out of it because my Hoover windtunnel beats that overpriced thing hands down every time!!!

I live in the middle of nowhere so I don't get anyone trying to sell me stuff. There have been a few times that I've missed the Jehovah's Witness people and I'm always disappointed. icon_twisted.gif

OMG those salespeople are NASTY LOL. some of them I should say. I mean ok they're doing their job trying to make a living- but I know, I tried selling encyclopedias for all of 2 weeks and expensive ones (long long time ago) and our supervisor said you do whatever you have to to get in the door. Well obviously I wasnt cut out for it because hey if someone cant tell me right there and then that they can afford a 2 grand set of encyclopedias then I'm not going to force the issue. I would never make that decision on the spot either. Any sane person wouldnt LOL

They're rude and pushy and bulldozers- the ones on the phone selling stuff- I actually phoned a number from an ad on TV and the woman just kept talkin icon_eek.gif and I interrupted her several times, I had to raise my voice a few times talking right over her to tell her listen - the thing on the ad said free samples so I called right. Well duh nothing is free but holy cow the B**** wouldnt shut up- she kept doing her spiel as if she wasnt even having a dialogue with another human. Where DO they get these people from? I finally said I'm hanging up now because I've told you several times I'm not interested and you're completely rude. (not that she heard, she was still pushing out her speech verbatim from her page or whatever, friggin robot LOL

The guys on the street are bad too. With their big hockey bags full of plastic junk toy shit lol. I've seen ladies get roped in because they have kids and the salespeople use the kids to get the moms/dads to get em stuff. I've had to raise my voice a couple times to those guys- standing there waiting for a bus or whatever and say WHAT PART OF NO DID YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?

The dilemna is if you let the person tell you what they're selling - cause who knows maybe it is legit or they're raising money for the Blind ors omething (but I would never give any money out to someone who went door to door- whether or not they were raising money or selling something- too many scam artists- oh yeah I'm raising money for the blind- oh that's great, I'll go down to the office and make out a cheque thanks icon_smile.gif so what you have a badge- anybody and their toy poodle can put together a legit looking piece of ID these days. I still cant believe how many people get suckered into that stuff- darn guilt or heart strings or whatever LOL.
If I need to buy something, I go out and find it- I don't have some person randomly knock on my door and convince me that I need something. I mean odds that a guy comes buy selling toilet paper and hey what a coinkydink I was just going to head to the store to buy 32 rolls icon_rolleyes.gif

Well........it's hard for me to be mean. Dh tells me to be mean, if necessary. Especially if he's not home. Just tell them no thanks and shut the door and lock it!

But, yeah, it's still hard sometimes to be mean. I don't know. I guess I'm a softy.

I saw someone sell my mother a bottle of cleaning stuff for $45...and he showed her how it would work and it didn't work as well as what I have or what she has, but she just couldn't say no. I told her she was crazy! But, once he saw that I wasn't interested, he just didn't try with me anymore and he still had a good attitude towards me.

The books this boy was selling were great looking books, but I just didn't feel like spending $300 on 16 books!!! He first asked to come into the house but I told him we could just sit on the porch. Oh well!!!

I know what you mean...I will buy the coupon books but I won't buy the encylopedias or any other book set because they are way overpriced. I'm sure I could find the same set on ebay for half the price.

Not a chance. When I lived in NJ, there was a woman who lived about 5 miles away that was brutally murdered by one of those solicitors. Years before, there was an 11 year old boy who was raped and murdered by ANOTHER CHILD in the next town over. I dont open my door to anyone anymore. Sorry Girl Scouts. I'm not allowing anyone in. Call me paranoid, but I call if safe.

I just don't even answer the door.

No one we know ever stops by unannounced anymore, and we chat with the neighbors over the backyard fence, so I'm pretty safe in assuming that anyone knocking on my door in the afternoon is selling something.

In the (THANKFULLY!) rare occasion I get trapped, once I was literally walking out the door to my car and a kid selling magazines caught me! I just keep saying no and ask them if they can leave something for me to look over and "send in later" if I want. That's my way of being mean in a nice way. Funny, they never have anything to leave!

A lot of those 'salespeople' are runaways and other trouble youth. Companys "hire" them promising the world and if they don't sell the quota in said town that day - they get left in the town! We have had a lot of trouble out of those companies. We even have a no solicitaion ordinace but they claim they didn't know - we have written numerous citations and even put one guy in jail one night!

Another thing - if for some reason you do let them in do not let them in the bathroom or anywhere out of your sight. They are know to "borrow" meds, rings on the kitchen window and other things laying around.

bUt you know what the reality of that is though? I buy girl guide cookies and do things to support a variety of causes- but I know the kids personally and if I want to give to the blind or any other cause . I will walk down to my local branch and give them a cheque icon_biggrin.gif
Paranoia or no (everyone's perspective on that is different - who cares) _ the reality is there are enough scam artists (never mind the criminals) out there ripping people off under the guise of being legit (even when a cop supposedly knocks on your door and flashes a badge through the peephole- you know, 100 years ago you couldnt go to the dollar store and pick up a fake badge- 100 years ago you couldnt type up and laminate your own fake ID. Anyone and their dog now can make anything resembling anything legit. Go research identity theft- it's a reality and it's a huge reality. Not taking precautions is sloppy and asking for trouble icon_smile.gif

we had a young girl selling magazines catch my husband and i when we went home for lunch one day. She told us she was trying to win a trip to Europe by selling the most magazine subscriptions. After her sales pitch(which lasted 10 minutes) i told her we were not interested her attitude changed and while she was walking away she was flipping us off and cussing us out. After that i never open the door to anyone, especially when my husband is not home. It's too risky.

b/c i answer the door, then tell them they have to come back when DH is home b/c i don't let anyone in my house at all, even FED EX in the rain--NO ONE, so most of the time they just don't come back.. the one person that does come in my house is the pest control person--We also have a home delivery food service company--Schwan's that comes by twice a month, I buy from them--but that's different--still don't let him in either--i never will forget the time my DH told him that 'we'd let you in but my wife hasn't cleaned up'--i could has hurt him--b/c then the guy would expect to get to come in when DH isn't home--heck no!!!

i sound like a freak
